Play up Wednesday! The song of 1924...

Recommended Posts

I know Norwich City claim their 'On the Ball City!' song to be the oldest around, but how about this from our very own Wednesdayites, found in the Green Un' from 1924 -

The tune itself

The cartoon on the front page of the Green Un' - 23rd February 1924. Incidentally these cartoons were a fixture in the Green Un's for decades and they're absolutely brilliant. If there's enough demand for it I might be persuaded to scan a few more and put them on here.

The letters page a week later...

By the way, a round of applause for the person who can spot the error.

My mother is 81.

As long as i can remember from, she sang it, and she still sings it as.

Play up Wednesday boys, united play like toys.

With a little bit of luck, we are sure to win the cup.

So, play up Wednesday boys.

Not saying it is exactly right, just that's how she does it.

She did not go to matches then, so she probably only heard it second hand, with a few bits missing.

I hope to god, she is singing it Sunday afternoon.

Thats what my grandparents sang too, but "with a little luck, we will win the FA cup"

&

Trot, trot, trot, trot Trotter, score a little goal for me,( to the chick, chick, chicken tune.)

Forgot that one.

Trot, trot, trot, trot Trotter, score a little goal for me.

Trot, trot, trot, trot Trotter, i want one before my tea.

I haven't had one since sunday?, and now it's half past three.

So, Trot, trot, trot, trot Trotter, score a little goal for me.

Or something like that.

I think there is a video of an elderly chap singing it somewhere.

It would be great if someone who could read music could record the tune and post it in the internet. That way at least we would know what we are working with and whether it could feasibly take off in the future.

Things like this should definitely be embraced. About time we got a museum at the stadium too.

I was thinking of something along the same lines. I sure we'd all agree we need an anthem for the players to run out on, not the usual rubbish. This could perhaps be it.

Sheffield's other team used to sing the same song, but for them it was

"Tu Tu Tu Tudor score another goal for me."

I think most clubs had something similar at one time.

Thanks for this wonderful insight.

I'm currently in the process of reading 'The Romance of The Wednesday' by Richard A. Sparling and came across this old anthem whilst reading chapter eleven and was compelled to find out a bit more about it, glad I have done its a wonderful snippet of Wednesday history.

Thanks again, much appreciated.
