Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

Ryan Connolly scored the only goal of the game to hand Derby County's reserves a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon at Alfreton Town.

The Irish youngster scored the only goal of the game early in the second half to secure all three points for the Rams in the totesport.com Central Division fixture.

Steven Davies and Dean Leacock continued their comebacks from injury by playing for an hour before being replaced, with no adverse reactions.

John Rooney played the full game after being given permission by his parent club Macclesfield Town to feature after his brief trial with the Rams last week.

The reserves return to action at the end of the month away to Port Vale.

Derby Team: Deeney, P Connolly, Davies (Hendrick), Pringle, Mendy, Leacock (Keane), Croft, Rooney, Mills, R Connolly (Ball), Martin.

Derby played squad that would give our first team torrid time, never mind the reserves.

I guess that those youngsters are feeling how they could force their way into first team picture now that more experienced players are not performing.

Second string edged out

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

Sheffield Wednesday's reserve team went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Derby County on Wednesday afternoon. The only goal of the game came from Ryan Connolly five minutes after half time.

The Owls fielded a youth-based team in Alfreton and coach Sean McAuley was pleased with the performance if not the result of the second string clash.

McAuley said: "The lads went into the game with a really good attitude and were unfortunate to lose because they deserved at least a point.

"Derby had senior players in their team but we gave them a really good game. We had one really good chance to equalise but it wasn't to be for us on the day."

Owls: O'Donnell, Wragg, Wilde, Cottingham (Hall 55), Nyoni, Barnett, Lekaj, Harrison, Oliver, Modest, Palmer

Unused substitutes: Jameson, Meehan, Tunnard, Kirkland
