  1. I first saw Wednesday on a bleak snowy Saturday winter day in January 1967 when we lost 0-1 to Liverpool. My dad didn't feel any pain though as he was still recovering from concussion having knocked himself out the previous May rushing to tell the next door neighbour Wednesday had gone two up in the FA Cup Final against Everton. The neighbour was too worried to watch the match, so dad was kindly keeping him informed rushing back and forth from the TV room to yell updates as the bloke nervously pottered away in his potting shed. Dad jumped up in ecstasy to proclaim David Ford had slotted a second at Wembley only to wallop the back door frame with one hell of a whack. Mum and I found him moaning on the floor but we got him to his feet and finally back to his senses in front of the TV just in time to see Everton score a third in 15 minutes to record a crushing victory. The good news is, dad has never seen a replay and is the only Wednesdayite on the planet who still believes we won the 1966 Cup
  2. Don Givens for Luton in a 1-5 win. Malcolm McDonald got a hattrick and Givens made all for him and scored the other two Duncan McKenzie for Forest same period in the early 70s - looked a cross between Pele and Best Brian McCLair for Man Utd - Game changer in two matches.
  3. Agreed outside the box. Still a deliberate foul and referee should have pulled back the play after the save for a free-kick on the edge of the box and booked the player.
  4. Made a mistake before the penalty too going to ground and not being able to recover when his attempt at a clearance ricocheted forward. Not looking to castigate though.
  5. Wise woman as it turned out - suffered a lot less footballing agonies than me in 20 years.
  6. First game I took my wife to and I paid good money to get her in the Southern Stand - She left Hillsborough a Chelsea fan. Weirdly, we're still married.
  7. What strikes me is that the top six have hardly missed a beat and chances are there will be no slip ups in the final 15 games...and...that Brighton result is going to be massive at end of season.
  8. A player has a bad game and he's hopeless and another has a good 20 minutes and he's undroppable. Reach is not a left back and should remain third choice. He has little defensive instinct for the role. He moves and recovers quickly but is regularly out of position.
  9. Watched the replay and FF played much better than most think. Set up Winnall twice with glorious chances. Reach us not a left winger either only looked good Friday cutting through the centre with decent pace compared to tiring players. FF has to start when fit he's different class .
  10. Splash the cash for a guaranteeed win every time we play Round 23 and might as well stay in bed for Round 16.
  11. Promotion asap. Big pond - bigger potential rewards. It can all fall apart in a hurry and there are no guarantees we would be a contender next season in another strong Championship. Even one year in the Premiership would fund a very strong side for the Championship if we were relegated.
  12. Think we'll line up: Westwood Palmer Loovens Sasso Fox Wallace Hutch Abdi Reach Rhodes Winnall Subs Wildsmith Hunt Jones Bannan McManaman Fletcher Forestieri
  13. Westwood - 8 - Does most things very well and didn't need to make a blinding save. Hunt - 8 - We looked vulnerable down his side in the first half but didn't get as much support as in the second. Wicked cross for Winnall and was terrific overall. Loovens - 8 - Class and leadership Sasso - 7 - Has those nightmare moments and always will but tries hard and did a good job Fox - 8 - A revelation. They hardly got down his side at all. Fit and strong and will be first choice LB. Wallace - 7 - Responsible for most of the good things in the first half. Less effective 2nd as I think he was instructed to stay closer to Hunt Bannan - 6 - Very busy but not very effective. Hutchinson - 9 A Wall. Still lucky not to get booked but thank goodness he's back. Forestieri - 5 A bit below par for him. We've all been crying out for him to be back on the left but it didn't really work. Rhodes - 6 - Did his job as he always has at this level. Not a complete package but exactly what we need to get out of this division. Winnall - 7 - Very lively with good movement. Cold have shown more composure a couple of times but going to be an important player. Reach - 8 - You wish he was a bit better than he s but this was a terrific cameo full of energy and a class finish. Hopefully his confidence soars. Abdi - 6 - Still looks like a reserve player which is very frustrating McManaman - Not on long enough to shine. Getting scary to think this team played no part: Dawson Lee Lees Jones Pudil Buckley McGugan Urby Fletcher Hooper Matias And we have another six out on loan...
  14. Wow...we have come a long way since those days. Struck by the height of Rhodes and his competence in the air - we need that. It was probably inevitable he would join us one day after that performance and really excited to see JR in our shirt. Forgotten what a good player Roberts was for them - Rhodes needs a provider like that to shine. Any chance we can get Benji Marshall back :)
  15. Can't watch Biggs without squirming - such a shameless self promoter.
  16. Watched the highlights and got me thinking how much better would it be for those players to play at Hillsborogh. I used to watch the reserves there in the 70s and 80s and while the crowds rarely exceeded 1000 it felt like "real" football being played in a real stadium. Looking at the grey skies, bare trees and frozen surrounds also got me wondering why I ever emigrated to Australia?
  17. "...I bet your fun on a night out" *You're - MOAN 9
  18. Haven't seen us today but our issues are obvious. We are predictable, getting bossed in midfield, and lack creativity but the biggest issue is out wide. Reach hasn't beaten a man since we signed him and he's not a natural winger. He's tidy but not great at attacking or defending. Wallace is a bit the same but can offer more although he comes back inside nine times out of 10. Apparently McManaman has looked like a winger and it will be good to see more of him but we are better having Nando on the left than Reach. Other than that, Bannan, Pudil and Hunt are way down on last year's level, Fletcher is only a 6.5 so far, FF is off the boil and we lack the energy and enthusiasm of last year.
  19. Reach is not definitively a defender or an attacker. He's a wing back with a good engine who has a touch of quality that we need. Pudil and Reach interchanged well against NUFC and deserve a chance to build their partnership. Some are disappointed Reach is not Bale but he's a good addition in this league and will be important in the run home.
