  1. Just back after a 600 mile round trip from Sidmouth. Brilliant weekend, we were nowhere near as bad as some on here made out. Not great quality but missed some really good chances and could have edged it. Team not quite gelling yet but so much more desire and enthusiasm than in the last couple of seasons. Met some great Wednesdayites over the weekend, drank too much, ate to much and reminisced about the good times way too much. Loved it! Never let the 90 minutes of football spoil the trip, we’d all be fooked if we did. WAWAW

  4. Some of us are old enough to remember the approach Howard Wilkinson took to our successful promotion chase in his first season. In his early season programme notes he said he and the squad were viewing the season as a series of 5-match runs, and that if we could average 3 wins, a draw and a defeat over those 5 games we’d go up. Applying Wilko’s logic to this season, WWWDL achieves 10 points from 15 - a season total of 92 points, which gains automatic promotion in anything but freak circumstances. Indeed WWWLL gathers 9 points or an 81 point season, which guarantees the play-offs. Going to Morecambe we are in the luxurious position of having a DWWW start. Applying Wilko’s calming approach we’ve already bagged the 10 points, making any points tomorrow a bonus. Of course, we are playing Morecambe, and even the most level-headed or pessimistic fan can’t pretend we aren’t looking really impressive, and we’d all be disappointed not to get at least a point, truthfully all 3. But I believe Wilko’s approach is brilliant, both for the players and fans. Exceed WWWDL and the boss keeps feet firmly on the ground by saying ‘we start again’. Fall short over the 5 games and the next batch is immediately round the corner. So, WWWD + Morecambe then Sunderland H Plymouth A Shrewsbury H Ipswich A Wigan A I think it’s a great way to view the season for a team with genuine aspirations of promotion.

  9. No point having players like Dele Bashiru, Waldock, Brennan, Adedoyin if you can't use them to cover Injuries for 5-10 games a season. That's how you expose them to 1st team football if you can't get them a love move. I'd be quite disappointed if we brought in another CB, CM or CF with that in mind, unless someone's out the door too

  12. Weird innit. Herries Rd has been getting cars smashed into every game for years and years and years. 100 coppers on duty most matchdays who stand back and let stewards get involved in sorting out crowd incidents during the games. And yet you never hear of em catching anybody for vandalism to parked cars. Our taxes are being put to incredible use arent they

  15. Putting results, points, and the league table to one side for a minute, let's pause to look at how we're performing 5 games into the new season and where we stand in comparison to our league rivals. A few stats for your perusal... Style of play: We average 374 passes per game, which puts us 12th in the rankings. Lincoln City lead the way on 465 per game, whilst Gillingham average only 268.2. We currently average 20 crosses per game, which puts us 8th by this metric. Rotherham lead the way with 30 crosses per game, whilst Lincoln City average 9. With 69 long balls per game, only MK Dons, Fleetwood and Plymouth have played fewer long balls than us. 78% of our passes have been short, and 17% have been long. 48% of our attacking play is down the right side of the pitch, with only 29% down the left. This makes us the most one-sided team in the division so far. Only MK Dons have been involved in fewer aerial duels than our 186 so far. By comparison, Burton and AFC Wimbledon have contested more than 300 apiece. We're currently top of the table for unsuccessful touches / bad control, with 16.4 per game. Oxford have the lowest in the division, with 9.6 per game. Attack: Our 5 goals put us distinctly in the middle of the pack, with 12 teams having scored more than us, 5 having scored the same, and 6 having scored fewer. MK Dons are the early leaders in this regard, with 10. In terms of shots, we're currently 18th, averaging 9.6 shots per game. Rotherham currently lead the way on 14.8 shots per game, whilst Donny are bringing up the rear with 8. 11 teams have had more shots on target than us, and 9 have had fewer. We currently average 3.4 shots on target per game, which puts us a bit behind the likes of MK Dons, Sunderland, Rotherham, Cheltenham and Fleetwood, who all average 5 or more per game. Poor old Donny are the whipping boys again here, with an average of only 1.6 shots on target so far. Only 12 of our shots have come from set pieces, which puts us behind 19 other teams so far, and way off the likes of Burton, who lead the way on 25. Defence: Our one goal conceded puts us joint top with Portsmouth in this regard. Only three teams' 'keepers have had to make fewer saves than ours. Peacock-Farrell has had to make 10 saves, 6 of which came from shots outside the area. Discipline: We're currently the third most-fouled team in the division, after Wigan and Morcambe. Our opponents have fouled us on average 14.2 times per game, or 71 times in total. 10 teams have committed more fouls than our 59, with Charlton being the dirtiest on 77. Only three teams have picked up more yellow cards than our 12. So far, Plymouth are the division's fair play leaders, with 4 yellows. Key take-aways for me: We're playing a possession-based short-passing game, keeping the ball largely on the deck, but some of our players aren't fully up to speed with it yet and are making a high number of individual errors. Our right flank is offering a fair amount of attacking threat, but our left isn't yet doing to the same degree (this was actually more balanced yesterday, with 40% of our attacks coming down the right and 34% down the left). We've not really got going from set pieces yet. Opponents are playing quite aggressively against us, but we're giving away a fair amount of yellow cards ourselves.

  16. Howard Wilkinson… A true Wednesday great Not the most charismatic individual but he had great intelligence and methods. Gave me some of my best years watching Wednesday That team he produced was a match for anybody. We feared no one and teams hated playing Wednesday Should we follow Wilkinson’s method ? Other people’s methods are difficult to follow but if you can replicate anything Wilkinson put in place you won’t go far wrong

  17. "Good evening ,Sir" "Argghh! Good God man! What on Earth do you think you're playing at sneaking in like that, I could have been doing anything." "I did knock several times ,Sir." "Yes, well, I'd got the headphones on." "I can see,Sir. Your laptop is still playing." "Chri-..erm, research...erm. What do you want anyway? Bursting in here like that." "I have come to do the match thread with you ,Sir" "What bloody match? It's the International break." "The Cup match, Sir. Tomorrow evening" "Cup match. The Cup doesn't start until November" "No, Sir the other Cup... "The League Cup...? "No ,Sir The.... "Man alive, make it stop! How low we have fallen. I'd forgotten all about this thing. What a showing up being in this. Can't we forfeit?" "Alas not Sir. You play Newcastle at home tomorrow evening." "We do? Oh, well, at least that's something. Be able to stick it to old turncoat Bruce." "Mr Bruce won't be there I wouldn't have thought" "Oh?" "He's not the manager of their U21 side" "Under 21's!? Out! Get out! Get out! Wake me when we play Plymouth" Newcastle United Under-21s will look to upset the in-form Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday as they travel to Hillsborough to get their EFL Trophy campaign started. The two teams are joined by League Two opposition in Harrogate Town and Mansfield Town, with the Owls one of the favourites to progress from the group. The tournament provides an opportunity for some of the younger players at the club to impress Steve Bruce as they look to knock on the door of the first team. 23. I don't think this trophy is meaningless at our level. If we were better we could afford to look at it with disdain, but this is where we are now. Have to try and compete for the silverware we have a chance of winning. Id rather be saying we were forced to go to this level and came back with a trophy than not. Rest of the cups, its pointless trying to compete.

  24. I think it highlights this league very well, Sunderland have a stadium that can hold nine times the amount of fans than Accrington. A team with 49,000 capacity stadium in league one, that has what financial fair play has created.. Its ironic because big teams going down like us because of financial fair play issues just causes them more problems with less revenue but you cant get away from big overheads, not like you can easily shrink a ground to lower the overheads. Thankfully we had a load of big earners leave or we could have been on for more points deduction for sure..

  26. yep , very much agree , at 28 and being a defensive mid he has at least 4 good years in the tank . I can guarantee it now he will leave and go to another side and play 45 games and be played of the year. the Wednesday way

  27. Yeah I reckon so. Luongo is the only "defensive" minded midfield we've got. Byers sit deep, but is more of a playmaker, Wing likes to get forward and Adeniran is a typical box to box midfielder. Luongo proved the worth of a genuine defensive midfielder away at Rotherham. If he's going to be missing for a long period, then I think it's imperative we replace him.

  33. for us to go up we need gregory to hit 20 and a fit windass . without those 2 fit and firing we wont even make the playoffs . we are capable of a top 2 finish but only if we start clicking at the top of the pitch . upto now we have peacock farrell to thank for been 2nd instead of mid table as he has been top notch.

  35. You are somewhat correct. Cars get broken into on there. Sometimes people have absolute junk on show and it still happens. The worst place to park on that road is where the bottom of some steps (that lead to a path) is… I presume it’s an easy escape for the nobs that are doing it.

  36. Gutted for the boy. Working so hard to get back fit and then for this to happen from such an innocuous incident is a real blow for him. A shame for the team too as that was a terrific display from him, one in which he seemed to be growing into it more and more as the game went on.

  37. He likely only had 1 offer. Because as mentioned before, the contract terms and wages that he dictates himself mean there are only two potential destinations by default, and the other had just spent £100m on Jack Grealish 2 days earlier and was still locked into negotiations for a player quoted at £150m. If his contract demands were more reasonable, he would have had his pick. He’d have had near total control over his next move. Only having 1 offer on the table and ending up in a poor league for an oil state club is the result of his contract, and he could have changed that. Tom Brady - there’s another example of how this could have played out from within the sporting world. He has played on “team friendly” deals for years, earning nowhere near the top QB’s in the sport now despite being the most decorated of all time in the sports history. He went to a team that wasn’t in the running for the top prizes and turned them into a winner overnight, still on “reduced” terms. It’s a shame our top footballers can’t weave the similar stories due to their apparently immovable contracts but.. here we are.

  38. Luongo's days at Hillsborough are probably numbered, I don't see him getting a new contract after this season if he even recovers properly. It's a shame because there's a real player there in his prime years and he's not the type of player who is just happy to collect a wage.

  42. Because he was in the last year of his contract, they wanted to reduce their wage bill, Luongo said he wanted a new challenge so they did the smart thing and got a little bit of cash for him. It’s pretty simple, there’s no conspiracy and clubs that aren’t us do try to cash in on players instead of letting them go for nothing. Unfortunately he has been crocked since he joined us. With so little football under his belt it was a poor decision by Moore to leave him on for 90 minutes.

  43. How can Darren Moore or the coaching staff not see what we can all see ? Look at the statistics over the years Bannan has been here, his corners and free kicks are nowhere near as good as his general play. For the avoidance of doubt I love Barry Bannan, one of our best players of the last 20 years.
