  1. If it's any help, I've been wrong about Wednesday for the last 55 years!

  3. DM: Sam is ok. He is touch and go, he has trained. It’s just whether we feel his fitness will benefit by playing tomorrow. We will see how he is tomorrow. DM: Sylla is ready now, we feel he just needs minutes on the pitch. He could easily be involved tomorrow. He’s trained all week and hit the volume of training we wanted. DM: Theo is ready to start games, he’s a very effective player. He has balance to his play and I’m pleased to say we are in a position where we feel he can start and play matches. DM: We’re not going to risk Mide this week, we want to give him another 5/6 days of training but he has trained with the squad this week. DM: We want to keep going full throttle. The players are still getting used to each other, working with the squad in and out of possession, lots of time spent on the training ground.. there is continuous work going on. DM: Morecambe are a team used to winning, as proven last year with their promotion. They are a club very much together, good results, bravery on the ball and a good tempo. They are not in League One to make up the numbers, it will be a tough game. DM: We don’t want to be complacent in any our part of our game. We are nowhere near the finished article, so we are maxing out in terms of the work we are doing to be the best we can be. DM: Lewis [Gibson] is fine and he can be involved tomorrow. DM: I thought Chey was immense last week. He played his part in a strong team performance. He was a pillar of strength for us, solid and we were really pleased with him. DM: Attitude, good play, playing to your absolute potential; many aspects go into winning a game of football. We will need them all tomorrow

  4. Some of us are old enough to remember the approach Howard Wilkinson took to our successful promotion chase in his first season. In his early season programme notes he said he and the squad were viewing the season as a series of 5-match runs, and that if we could average 3 wins, a draw and a defeat over those 5 games we’d go up. Applying Wilko’s logic to this season, WWWDL achieves 10 points from 15 - a season total of 92 points, which gains automatic promotion in anything but freak circumstances. Indeed WWWLL gathers 9 points or an 81 point season, which guarantees the play-offs. Going to Morecambe we are in the luxurious position of having a DWWW start. Applying Wilko’s calming approach we’ve already bagged the 10 points, making any points tomorrow a bonus. Of course, we are playing Morecambe, and even the most level-headed or pessimistic fan can’t pretend we aren’t looking really impressive, and we’d all be disappointed not to get at least a point, truthfully all 3. But I believe Wilko’s approach is brilliant, both for the players and fans. Exceed WWWDL and the boss keeps feet firmly on the ground by saying ‘we start again’. Fall short over the 5 games and the next batch is immediately round the corner. So, WWWD + Morecambe then Sunderland H Plymouth A Shrewsbury H Ipswich A Wigan A I think it’s a great way to view the season for a team with genuine aspirations of promotion.

  5. So preseason I defended the idea that our pre-BPF keepers were good enough. But with the clean sheets and the confidence I have with him and the defence, I'd like to say I was totally wrong. We did need a new first team keeper. So glad to have BPF. Anyone else have something they were wrong about Wednesday related... Otherwise we can all just get of track and talk about marmite again.

  9. There are several facets to the BPF signing. Improved the confidence throughout the team as it’s no longer a liability position. His confidence on the ball and distribution. I don’t actually think his shot stopping has been massively tested other than the pens. But no doubt he’s a great shot stopper, confident and authoritative when required. Great communicator as well. 100% a great acquisition for this season and credit DM for not only acknowledging the weakness but having the strength of belief to sort the problem. Not to mention getting Dawson out on loan to build experience and hopefully confidence. I just hope we are already looking for next seasons solution because it’ll almost certainly be needed.

  11. Get Byers in for Luongo and when in posession, sit him deeper. Play Bannan higher. Adeniran can support from the middle. Defensively, sit Bannan on Stockton with Byers and Adeniran forming a DM midfield pairing. Paterson can just wander around, staring and growling at people and generally scaring everyone. Sorted.

  12. Just an update for anyone interested... I got no response from the club in the standard money claim period so was asked if I wanted to escalate and raise a CCJ instead. Obviously, I didn't really WANT to but I felt I had to so did so. During the 10 day wait period for a CCJ to be established I received a call from Alistair at the club. He asked me to confirm my bank details and said I'd be refunded in full (plus the £70 claim fee) in the next 24 hours. In all, happy I got the refund and glad the club saw sense but really disappointed in what it took to get there. If you want to do the same just be prepared to sit and wait for a month or two. Luckily things on the pitch are looking up so I'm finding it easier to look past it! That and my bank balance has improved unexpectedly.

  15. Those games are actually quite tough, 7 points would probably be an acceptable return. So a win against Morecombe and then 7 points gets us on 20 points after 10 games which I think is a good place to be

  17. "So, what do you know about Morecambe then?" "His real name was John Bartholomew" "Eh?" "He took his stage name from his home town. During his heyday with partner Ernie Wise, really Ernest Wiseman of course, their Christmas specials pulled in over 28m viewers." "Incredible-" "Indeed it is ,Sir , when you consider just 29 million people across public service broadcaster the BBC and commercial network ITV watched the Euro final last year. I doubt any comics will have that sort of pulling power again for one off shows on terrestrial" "No, I mean incredible that you have completely got the wrong end of the stick about Morecambe. I wanted to know about the football!" "I was just getting to the football, Sir. Morecambe was a Luton Town fan. It came after a move to Harpenden when his young son asked him to take him to a match. It was Luton or Watford and he opted for the former." "No, no, no! Morecambe FC" "Not, FC, Sir, Morecambe OBE. Order of the Empire for contribution to the arts " "You're having me on here!" "Indeed ,Sir. The truth is, I have been trying to distract you" "From what?" "From getting carried away, Sir. You've been very giddy about the football this week, and this sort of optimism always end in a fall. I just don't want it to be from a height. I don't want you to start getting carried away." "You're right of course. Experience tells me not to get too carried away where the Owls are concerned. You're quite right ,I need to reign it in a bit." "Very good, Sir. Do you have a prediction for tomorrow?" "Yes. It'll be a tough one all right. I think a conservative 5-0 to the Wednesday" "Ugh, it's started." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MORECAMBE -V- WEDNESDAY Kick off : 3:00pm Mazuma Stadium -------------------------- MORECAMBE Ahead of the game, manager Stephen Robinson admits that, despite expecting a tough challenge at the weekend, it’s one that the club looks forward to. “That’s what we’re here for,” Robinson said. “All that hard work last season and to get into this level of football, these are the games fans want to come to. “You seen the atmosphere on Tuesday night, it’ll be another full house on Saturday and we’re really looking forward to it. “Make no mistake, it’s a tough, tough challenge, they’ve not conceded a goal yet but hopefully we aim to change that.” POSSIBLE - : -------------------------- WEDNESDAY Owls: Sam Hutchinson will be assessed ahead of the game on Saturday. The defender has begun the season in fine form but picked up an injury in our 1-0 win over Fleetwood. He is rated ‘touch and go’ by manager Darren Moore to feature. Olamide Shodipo has trained with the squad this week but the Wednesday boss will not risk the QPR loanee this weekend and will give the forward more time on the training pitches. Elsewhere, Massimo Luongo has been ruled out, while Lewis Gibson is scheduled to resume full training from Monday. 19. In my fifty odd years supporting Wednesday I never thought I would here a Wednesday manager describe a trip to Morecambe as “ a difficult game” a pre season warm up maybe, but eh it’s where we are. Let’s get out there and smash them to bits.

  23. I’m unsurprised as the Sunderland website gave a pretty big indication that this might be the case. Am disappointed as it is the last weekend before the kids go back to school so was going to use this game as the base for a family event. Now We are going to end up having a family picnic where we are actually going to have to speak to each other! What a nightmare!

  26. Hutch on the bench is fine We still have 50+ games this season, the last thing we want is any of our players pulling up against Morecambe in August and missing 25... We've got the strength in depth to compensate the loss of pretty much anyone.

  30. Some clubs/places just seem to be a good fit for a player. Seems like that is the case here. he is not the most technically gifted but he is very effective and tough too. Great mentality. Part the reason Bannan has stayed is that he is settled in the area and feels at home at the club. pleasing to hear. Feels like there is a more positive atmosphere around the place

  34. I get the logic but surely if the team wins 3 on the trot they then have the manager’s permission to take it easy for a couple of games. The mind set must be instilled into every player that they have to go out to win each and every game. Having a day off here and there just won’t be good enough for Moore this season. He has players in the squad more than capable of seizing the place of any slackers now.

  35. I disagree. I think this is an opportunity for the club to have a real good go at a cup competition. The way football has gone recently the chances of winning a cup outside of the top 6 clubs is minimal.... outside the premier league non existent. We are aiming to have only one season at this level.... lets have a go at winning this. We have a big enough squad and the final is at Wembley. Lets go for it and give us fans something with that day out.
