How far we have come!

A year ago not one of these players had worn a Wednesday shirt in a competitive match. It's almost an entire excellent team. Certainly a full forward-line and a full midfield.

Steven Fletcher

Jordan Rhodes

Sam Winnall

George Boyd

Almen Abdi

David Jones

Adam Reach

Morgan Fox

I suppose it demonstrates how limited our recruitment of defenders has been. Which is very strange given that Carlos likes solidity. We do still have two weeks to kick-off, and it is glaringly obvious why Carlos has his focus firmly at the back.

But more positively, each of the above are excellent additions. You wouldn't be unhappy with each and every one of them getting bags of game time this season.

15 days and counting. An unbelievable squad. Injury free. Nobody has left. Undoubtedly strong candidates for promotion.

A kind break here and there, balanced line-ups, 20% more positivity in approach, and we could be about to take part in the most enjoyable and successful season as Wednesday fans for 20 years.

A year ago I tried to open this thread.....NZ internet is third world today, they must be replacing the hamster that powers the antiquated system. I think they used fishing line and not fibre, rookie error.

A year ago we were beaten play-off finalists

Now we're beaten play-off semi finalists

Those signings made all the difference

Sure we finished in a higher league position with more points, but this time last year we'd come within one game of the Prem. Last season we were two away.

Sure we can congratulate ourselves on the excellent squad we have on paper, but Derby have been doing that for the last 5 years and it's got them nowhere. Proof is in the pudding, not the paper...  you're right Holmowl, we did good signings wise, now it's time for them to deliver the goods.

I'd say without doubt your squad is very, very strong. But, as others have pointed out, it's all about consistency in this league - You're in a good position where you have strength in depth, unlike us who still only have 1 senior forward and 0 senior goal keepers.

You'll score goals for fun, I think it's just about keeping your shape defensively.

Just out of interest, what's your goal this season? Would you take another shot at the Play-offs or do you think now is the time you must make a serious attempt to get into them top 2 spots and go up automatically.

I've never seen a league so open, Wolves are spending 12m on a European Midfielder and Birmingham are making some good shrewd signings too.

Its almost like other teams are trying to achieve the same thing as us.

Hope I'm wrong but I think the coming season will be pretty much like last . Not because of our lack of CBs but because of our non-scoring 'prolific' forwards . F F was top scorer from midfield / up front whilst our specialist forwards didn't manage double figures . I'm sure we'll still be difficult to beat and will be around that top six but can't see many 3 ,4 nil victories coming ,so it will be the usual tight nail-biting finishes for us . Just think most OTs on here ,and elsewhere , have an unrealistic view of just how good we are .

How many of our "prolific forwards" were here, fit and available for selection for the whole of the season?

I think our most prolific, based on thier careers are Hooper, Rhodes and Winall. One was injured, the other two joined late on.

Donny , true but what's to say we dont have similar this season ? Previous reputation counts for nothing. It's about the here and now and Rhodes didn't impress in what was half a season and Winnall didn't really get a chance.Boyd I really like and always had done since his days at P'boro but we still lack pace and even a fit Hooper isn't a steam train , more a tank engine. I think many in the C'ship are at a similar level and all will be hoping for a H'field season . Essential we get off to a flyer . We did create chances last season but weren't that good at finishing them off .

I

On paper those look very good players at Championship level.

But how many can I say had a successful 2016/17 at Wednesday? In my opinion not one.

.... and with the exception of Sam Winnall, all of those players listed above that we signed last season needed game time to get up to speed in terms of fitness and match sharpness. We need to be signing players now so that they are ready to contribute fully this coming season.

We've got a few strikers you can have, can I interest you in Atdhe Nuhiu? He's quality.....honestly

If you think we will score goals for fun you haven't watched us.

61 in 48 matches last year!

Yeah, BUT we didn't have the injuries the first season like we did last and YET we finished higher in the table.

Aye, you seem to be in a bit of a mess tbh, can't see you doing anything other than mid table. Shame really, always liked your club, proper set of fans too.

As mentioned above, at a push you can have our top international striker Nuhiu... he's errrm reyt good...

Hopefully you're right, the potential in our squad is fantastic but it's down to our tactics and management to get the best out of them, which just didn't happen last season, way too negative. Personally I'd take play offs again but we really should be giving top 2 a go, like you said it seems wide open this year. Can definitley see Wolves, Brum, Villa and Hull challenging for the top 2 spots.

Didn't we? If I recall correctly during the play-off final season we were all bemoaning our injury luck

At a very quick glance (so may be wrong on the overall picture), Hutch played fewer games in 15/16 than last season, Lees and Loovens played the same number in both seasons and Forestieri played only two less games this season than last. I think we've had pretty bad luck with injuries for both seasons to be honest!

After Wembley we all said we'd come back stronger and go one better, but that didn't happen. The signings were good on paper but we had no clear/concise style of play.

We had enough quality to win the playoffs last season but it's more a case of the tactics that were deployed and the players bought into that. Our plan was to grind out results but it was awful and boring to watch. I see no reason why it won't be any different this time around and it's a concern.

We finished 4th which was an improvement in league position and points total, but we did worse by losing in the SF. That 6 game winning streak at the end papered over the cracks.

I don't have a short memory though and we have come far in a short space of time. We're lucky to have DC as our owner and I believe he will take us to where we want to be.

Why do 3 or 4 goal victories matter,i'll take 1 nils every day (and before some smart alec comes back,i know we don't play every day)
