Long throws again

Recommended Posts

Five minutes in on Saturday we won a throw about 30 yards out. Pudil wiped the ball and slung it long into the six yard box.

So what?

For me it's another clear sign that either the players, or more likely Carlos, have stepped it up a couple of gears. We all know that upto a few weeks ago that throw-in would have gone back to Loovens in our own half, then Lees, then Hunt, then back to Lees etc etc...

The throw led to nothing more than a penalty box skirmish, but with the likes of Fletch, Hooper and Rhodes these days we are really dangerous in the air. Over half of our recent 20 or so goals have been headers!

It also mixes it up for the oppos defence and manager. Instead of happily giving us throw-ins, knowing it will buy time to reorganise as we fart around with it (sorry, recycle possession) they now have to prepare deeper in their box for the threatening long throw. Watch our second goal. Pudil wins the throw and wipes the ball to launch it. The Derby players are moving back deeper ready for it, allowing Wallace a huge gap and demands a short throw. 20 seconds later it's worked to Reach for that cross.

Sign of the change of approach in my opinion. More urgency, more variety, less predictability and brilliant success.

Nothing more frustrating than having a throw-in deep in the opposition half only for it to end up back to Loovens or even Westwood. The same goes for free kicks. It has been a constant source of frustration that what are potentially attacking positions for many teams have been inconsequential for us. It is pleasing to see that we have woken up to the use of long throws, at last. I agree with Oxon, several players ought to be capable of being trained to produce a decent long throw.

It is Pudil that does them. They should train up others so it is easy to do from either side and someone to do them when Pudil is not there

I don't think it is something you can teach. You can either throw the ball long or you can't.

Good point, I suspect its more to do with not being the way Carlos has wanted to play. I wonder how much time, if any, has been spent on this aspect of the game.

As for not being able to develop a longer throw, I'm sure Jessica Ennis didn't just say "Oh I can throw the javelin x metres and it's not worth practising because I won't be able to throw it further". Players can develop arm and shoulder muscles to aid improvement as well as the technical side.

True. But if it was that simple every club would have two or three long throw specialist in their team as it's a great option to have at your disposal.

I think it's highly likely that Carlos has dictated the short backwards possession-keeping throws and free-kicks.

Im delighted to see us mix it up and show more positivity now.

And its working!

You've let the cat out of the bag! Apparently Urby hasn't actually been injured, but instead, has spent the last 6 months alternating training sessions with the Chinese State Circus and the Staveley Dutch Gymnastics Emporium, where he has been secretly learning the art of the somersault long throw! This is Carlos's master plan set to be unveiled in the playoffs. Apparently he can throw one off a good 40m WTF:.
