The ref at the centre of the Newcastle game - was he not the ref at home to Brentford was it, when he completely lost the game in the first half. He did not give Fernando a pen, he kept getting hacked down and then he booked FF for a very limited tackle.

If that is the ref - Karma.

Don't know about this ref but I certainly knew the law. Yonks ago when Mark Smith was the Owls penalty taker we were playing at Maine Road in a cup game I think, and we were awarded a pen. Smith runs up and scores Owls fans go bananas but the ref orders it retaken for encroachment (As should have happened last night.) this happened again on the retake so he ordered a third. Smith missed having never missed a penalty before.

Shows how badly we need to trial video refs. Never mind it "interfering with the game", let's just have some accurate decisions made when it really matters.

Regarding Stroud, you'd have thought knowing the pen should be retaken should be in Refereeing 101. Absolute toilet.

I recognise that Stroud as being pretty useless whenever we have had him.

The FA need to sort this, the ref that sent FF off away at Hull never got any real punishment and then booked a player for breaking his leg this season.

Shock horror it was Newcastle though, any other club and nothing would have been said and everything goes back to normal...

The problem with refs at the moment is that they have become almost like celebrities, more is made of them.

We can now probably all name at least 5 refs we know in the game, 20 years ago would that have been the case?

They don't cross the line purely to ref games any more, they take ages having pointless chats with players. They are too bothered about being in charge, they are like headmasters.

They need to learn from the rugby refs.

Why none of his assistants or the 4th official didn't say anything just shows how bad the standards are

Technology can't come in soon enough

The weird is thing is that he did consult with one of his assistants and still got it wrong.

The only way a free-kick can be given to the defending team at a penalty is when the ball is kicked backwards, the wrong player takes the kick, the taker does a 'fake' kick to get the keeper to dive, or if they hit the woodwork and are then the next player to touch the ball on the rebound. Retaking a penalty doesn't happen a lot, but it's not so rare that the ref should've gotten so confused about whether to order a retake or not.

According to the law Sky put  on the screen last night a free kick is given to the defensive team if

" the penalty is taken and missed with an attacking player encroaching. A free kick is given to the defensive team from where the encroaching player was when the pen was struck "

Thought is was a goal kick myself but why would you bother penalising an attacking player if pen is missed

How would technology have made a different here?

Its just a ref not knowing the rules and his assistants not having the balls to tell him he's wrong (or they don't know the rules either).

If refs enforced the encroachment rule properly, it would be happening ever week and there'd be no possibility of the ref forgetting the rule.

Perhaps the rule is there to cover all possibilities, e.g. the miss hits the post or is parried by the keeper with the team scoring from the rebound.
