TODAY’S OPPOSITES

Wolverhampton Wanderers are probably the most successful professional Football Club on planet Earth, having won the European Cup on no fewer than 127 occasions and the World Super Cup quite often.

The 'Wolves' as they are wittily referred to by their millions of supporters worldwide, can be seen at their magnificent ground which is the finest stadium in Wolverhampton, with the possible exception of the Aldersley Leisure centre on the outskirts of the town. The stadium has four stands, three named after players who have become legendary at the club - Derek Dougan, Derek Dougan and Derek Dougan and one after a former director called Jack Harris. But that’s not where the game is taking place.

Perhaps the finest moment in the illustrious history of the 'Wolves' was their 7-2 drubbing of bitter Black Country rivals Plymouth Argyle in the 1972 European Cup Final, the goals scored by Derek Dougan and Derek Dougan. Note: the term 'Black Country rivalry' is something of a misnomer as Wolverhampton is not in the Black Country. The early nineteen seventies were the heyday of great players like Derek Dougan and Derek Dougan and the 'wolves' in their famous 'dirty yellow' shirts emblazoned with the iconic club crest, an allusion to Captain Kirk, were just too strong for the valiant Argyle side.

Sheffield Wednesday could give a debut to loan signing Callum McManaman following the winger's arrival until the end of the season from West Brom. Striker Fernando Forestieri is expected to be in contention after missing the draw at Preston with a muscle strain.

Wolves have no fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to Hillsborough. Forwards Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Joe Mason could start as boss Paul Lambert has suggested he is likely to freshen up the team.

    ▪    The Owls' victory in this fixture last season was their first at Hillsborough against Wolves since 1964 - the same year they last recorded back-to-back home wins over them.

    ▪    Wolves have lost once to Wednesday in the Championship this season (0-2 in November) - they haven't lost twice to them in the league in a single season since 1932-33.

    ▪    Sheffield Wednesday have only failed to score in one of their 11 home Championship games this season, losing 2-0 to Leeds in August.

    ▪    Wolves - winners in their last away league game at Nottingham Forest - haven't won back to back away Championship games since New Year's Day 2016.

    ▪    A win for the Owls would mean their best run of form at Hillsborough since January 2016 (a run of four successive wins).

KING CARLOS’ PEARLS OF WISDOM

“Our supporters have been amazing all season as they always have. We will have a crowd of over 30,000, which is fantastic. But now we need them more than ever. Two games in three days is very, very tough and this will be very demanding on the players. They will be playing in the red, under the red, and this is the time when injuries can happen, absolutely sure. So I ask our fans to be as loud as they can, show the level of support that they are known for around the country.

We have Callum available for the first time and he will give us a further option. He is a very good player and we are pleased to have him here as we have watched him for some time. He is an option so let’s see what we will do on Monday. We also have good wishes for Fernando. He came away from Newcastle with some pains so could not play against Preston as there was a risk. Wolves will bring a different challenge, with a different dynamic under the new coach Paul Lambert.”

Call it a day Pauli. We've all had enough of these threads.

Gutted I can't make it to the game, but infront of a large crowd we are usually unstoppable. Fancy a big win, hopefully a much fresher performance than the preston game and a nice 4-0 win. Forestieri, Lees, Reach and Wallace with the goals.

Obviously only joking, keep up the good work Pauli, love learning so many insightful, historically accurate facts you include in your Matchday Threads.

A must win this game.  Still think he may rest some players.  Possibly Loovens, Fletcher, Pudil, Bannan, Wallace and maybe even Hutch rested due to age or recent injuries.  The only definite starters are Westwood, Lees and Reach.

Depends what their condition is on his pc screen. If it is below 88% I probably wouldn't start them but like on FM anything around 89% condition then they'll be okay.

Thank god those young pretenders (or tøssers as the Wolves fans would call them) that ruined the last game with their inferior OMDT "talents" have been strung up and Pauli has brought back shadow llama.

REVENGE FOR '95! Revenge for ruining fat Kev's penalty prowess! Revenge for Waddle taking pens again torture.

Let's kill some Wolves.

Morning all,

Nice one Pauli, nice to see normal service is resumed.

Can't wait for this one, expect us to put in a much better performance this time around.

I'm going for a 3-1 Wednesday win, Baz, Fletcher and Reach the scorers.

TO VICTORY!!

I remember the Boxing Day game in 1990 - was sat in the uncovered South Stand front seats.

It pee'd it down - so much that at one stage you couldn't see the ball. Was sitting with plastic bags on to stem the rain but still got soaked.

The game was a 12 noon kick off to cut down on crowd problems but by 3 pm the weather had cleared.
