Sam779
http://mobile.swfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/owls-tribute-to-thai-king-on-saturday-3374033.aspx Sheffield Wednesday, in a show of unity and reverence for our chairman Dejphon Chansiri and the people of Thailand, will mark the recent passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Saturday’s home game against Queens Park Rangers. The king of Thailand, aged 88, was the longest reigning monarch in the world, with 70 years on the throne. Just prior to kick-off, supporters will be asked to stand in silence and pay their respects whilst the royal anthem of Thailand - Sansoen Phra Barami - is played on the big screen, which will also display images of King Bhumibol Adulyade. As they did at Huddersfield last Sunday, the Wednesday players will wear black armbands for today’s fixture, while the flags at Hillsborough will fly at half-mast for the remainder of a 30-day mourning period since the king’s passing. Our sympathies remain with Mr Chansiri, his family and friends, and everyone in Thailand at this extremely difficult time.
aeroswfc
Not really. Dejphon Chansiri Is our owner and from Thailand. Probably something he's requested.
PopePiusX
Given that Thailand is now in a YEAR of official mourning, I think it's the least we can do.
abrodie2002
Not really... the Thai people have a great love for their king! Although over recent years the Thai monarchy has had less of a role in the politics of the country, in the past the King had been responsible for a lot of the changes in government and is well loved by the people of Thailand for his way of treating the average Thai person... particularly rural Thai people. It may be illegal in Thailand to speak negatively of the monarchy but you won't find many Thai people who don't hold the monarchy in high respect. The owner of SWFC is Thai and he wants to honour his king in this way then so be it! He owns the club and its his decision.
OxonOwl
Not surprising and certainly not weird. The Thais take their royalty very seriously.
Sam779
I don't mean weird in a disrespectful way. Won't it seem a bit strange having 25,000 English people at a football match listening to their anthem and watching a montage?
PopePiusX
Also, let's withhold judgement a) anyway and b) certainly until the Queen carks it, the griefgasm then will be astonishing.
Freshfish
Duty and Respect. DC is doing both. Don't see a problem. If I was there I would remain silent but wouldn't stand up...just as I wouldn't stand for any monarch.
notts0wl
Fair enough. Sign of respect towards our chairman, hope everyone is respectful on the day. It is a bit odd in a way but then I don't pretend to understand Thai culture.

If people don't think it's weird I will ask them, did you ever think you would ever be in the situation where you were actively mourning the death of a king from a far away land that has no connection to you? Doctor Duran
lovely idea... but 2 mins of silence is something to worry about.. 1 mins is long enough normally and feels like 10 mins sometimes.. I hope it will be respected for the full 2 mins but can't see it..
***HIRSTY***
Extremely difficult time?
ViolaOwls
I get it, but I do find it strange in a way. Yes Thai owners, but most people have never heard of there king. Would you hold it for the king of spain? say if QPR were owned by them? Edited October 20, 2016 by ViolaOwls
runningaround
Do hope vast majority abide by the respects, for Thai people the king there is highly highly regarded and seen as a father figure, not the divisive figure the monarchy can be seen here as at times. 2 minutes is nothing. LiamK2292
Don't really have a problem with it, was probably at DC's request anyway. Respect is due.

Beholder
Maybe could have been phrased a little better but I'm sure everyone will sympathise and respectfully observe the silence.
