King Of Thailand Tribute - Bit weird?

Sheffield Wednesday, in a show of unity and reverence for our chairman Dejphon Chansiri and the people of Thailand, will mark the recent passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Saturday’s home game against Queens Park Rangers.

The king of Thailand, aged 88, was the longest reigning monarch in the world, with 70 years on the throne.

Just prior to kick-off, supporters will be asked to stand in silence and pay their respects whilst the royal anthem of Thailand - Sansoen Phra Barami - is played on the big screen, which will also display images of King Bhumibol Adulyade.

As they did at Huddersfield last Sunday, the Wednesday players will wear black armbands for today’s fixture, while the flags at Hillsborough will fly at half-mast for the remainder of a 30-day mourning period since the king’s passing.

Our sympathies remain with Mr Chansiri, his family and friends, and everyone in Thailand at this extremely difficult time.

Not really... the Thai people have a great love for their king! Although over recent years the Thai monarchy has had less of a role in the politics of the country, in the past the King had been responsible for a lot of the changes in government and is well loved by the people of Thailand for his way of treating the average Thai person... particularly rural Thai people.

It may be illegal in Thailand to speak negatively of the monarchy but you won't find many Thai people who don't hold the monarchy in high respect. The owner of SWFC is Thai and he wants to honour his king in this way then so be it! He owns the club and its his decision.

I don't mean weird in a disrespectful way. Won't it seem a bit strange having 25,000 English people at a football match listening to their anthem and watching a montage?

agreed. If people don't think it's weird I will ask them, did you ever think you would ever be in the situation where you were actively mourning the death of a king from a far away land that has no connection to you?

Not really.

Dejphon Chansiri Is our owner and from Thailand.

Probably something he's requested.

Well lets see if he respects our wish of blue and white strips next season?

After all SWFC is a religion to most of us:biggrin:, and Hillsborough is our church
