FORWARD SET TO LEAVE CLUB

Posted on: Sat 15 Jan 2011

Carlisle United can today confirm that Gary Madine has agreed a move in principle that, if completed, will take him to Sheffield Wednesday on a four-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee (subject to registration and finalisation of all paperwork).

The striker, who was ever-present for the Cumbrians this season, will not be involved in the Carlisle squad for the visit of Bristol Rovers today.

Managing director John Nixon said: "This isn't the first offer that we have received for Gary and we have, in fact, turned down two enquiries that have been in excess of £200,000 over the course of the last 12 months.

"He is a player that has generated a lot of interest, particularly since he came to prominence after his goal at Wembley in March. He has led the line as a 20-year-old and he has done it well, and it became apparent very quickly that clubs were starting to come to look at him.

"We have been in discussion with Sheffield Wednesday since Thursday about Gary, and the player was keen to make the move once he had spoken to them and to those who advise him. Our manager then spoke to him and, after some consideration, we reluctantly agreed that we would accept the offer and allow him to go.

"He feels that it is a big club, with crowds often in the region of 15-20,000, and moving to a club like that is a challenge that he wants to take.

"He's a player that we will always have an interest in, as he has been with us since his days in the Youth team, and we wish him all the very best should the move be completed."

Madine came through the youth ranks at Brunton Park and made his debut at the age of 17 in March 2008, coming on as a late substitute in a televised League One fixture against Nottingham Forest.

He scored his first goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Yeovil in August 2008 and went on to have loan spells at Rochdale, Coventry City and Chesterfield.

It was on his return from the Spireites that he started to cement a first-team place, grabbing four goals in nine appearances including United's consolation goal in the 4-1 defeat to Southampton at Wembley Stadium in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

Everyone at Carlisle United wishes Gary Madine every success for the future.

If I recall correctly, I think he's a striker who has always been handful. He's a big lad, who's good in the air. But his goal record suggests he's got something about him.

At 20, he's a good age and with plenty of football under his belt already. He's been Carlisle's best player for a couple of seasons.

Undoubtedly, he's a good addition to our current striking options. I'm just a little concerned about the rumours of £800k. If that's true, it'll obviously be based on certain achievements...but regardless...it's a lot of money. If he does well, we pay £800k. But are we likely to get that back for him? I'm not so sure.

I'm more encouraged about the fact that it seems the Reynold's deal is near completion. He'll be a real asset. (And the end of Tommy Spurr)

Guest Distraught!

Good signing. Young, with bags of potential and a proven league 1 striker. We will get a couple of million for him in a few years. Nice one, Milan and Alan. Just need a midfielder now. How nice is it being able to actually buy players?

A couple of midfielders would be nice. A Central Midfielder who can pass well and a winger with a bit of pace.
