Since when did David James become a good capture?
He's moved to a team in the same division.
If anything it shows what a bad state Englands goalkeeping situation is in.

He might occasionally make crazy, crazy decisions, but IMO they've just signed the best English goalkeeper in the country.
Which is a pretty remarkable acheivement given that they finished in midtable last season and would have been significantly lower had it not been for Nicky Maynard.

Like I said, a sad state of affairs for English goalkeeping.

Speaking from an international point of view, with David James as England's number 1 i agree.
Speaking from a Championship point of view, James is going to be the best keeper in the division by quite some distance- Andy Lonergan is the current holder of that title, and James is absolutely miles better than him, 40 years old or not.

He's a Championship keeper anyway, with Portsmouth.
Sorry - disagree entirely he's the best keeper in that division by miles. I'd have Grant over him any day of the week, and I don't rate Grant that highly.
I think the shock here is that he's signed for a club like Bristol who we think are below us stature wise.

His contract expired with Pompey at the end of last season on June 30th though- so he was never a Portsmouth player in the championship.
I was sure he'd end up in the Premiership or at Celtic- he's in a different league to Grant IMO. Not only is he a far more talented goalkeeper, but he's also played international football, he's played for Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa in the top division and he's been pretty successful at most places he's been. He's got the Premier league record for most clean sheets as well. He's got more than 700 appearances, almost all at Premier league level.
How can you compare Grant to all of that?

I wasn't comparing them. I said I'd prefer Grant over James. (I love how we're having two seperate arguments at the moment by the way).
My point was however, all this James bumming about him signing for Bristol City is crap. He's not that good. It's just that Bristol City are a lot better than we are. That's the struggle.

I don't think James is world-class or owt. I just think he's still (even at 40) much better than a cold tuesday night away at Scunny!

But football is all about opinions, so I guess we shall just have to wait and see

The fact that DJ (nudging 40) was considered for the World Cup pretty much says it all.
I still say England will be in 'Pot 3' come the 2018 World Cup draw.
Perhaps DJ will still be around to 'do a job' ?

A month ago he was England's first choice goalkeeper, now he's not as good as Lee Grant

Who would you prefer at S6 now - a 40 year old David James (with I imagine spectacuar wages) or Grant?
It's difficult to answer that FG as we're not playing in the Championship, nor when we were, challenging at the right end (which I fully expect Brizzle to be doing next year), but in our current predicament I would have been more than happy to get £1m for Grant and replace him with the current England number 1 (regardless of which division we were in)

I don't know how they pulled it off but kudos to them because James is too good for the Championship
Bristol have made some good signings this summer so could well be a promotion candidate
