madowl47
In my opinion he was one of the best players we've ever had. What energy he had box to box was so easy for him. Many non-owls have often said how on earth did he get picked for England. I always say you had to see him week in week out to recognise how good he was. His England place was richly deserved and at that time for the job he had to do I would not have swapped him for any other player in the top division. modboy
VERY good, if only we had him now... even second time around he still improved the team
DobbinTheDonkey
A true irreplaceable player.
Guest AnotherOwl
He was first class. Pissed teams off, created loads of opportunities, and was very consistent. Nothing but good memories of Carlton playing.
HIGHERSTATE
Id go as far to say he was the backbone of that team for a couple of years...both in an attacking and defensive sense.. And I also used to enjoy his funny shots on goal.. I was also conviced he was stoned most of the time.
modboy
beginning of the end when we sold him... Taylor was never given the chance then we had Haslam etc, sort of can see where it all went wrong
KennyPowers55
As important to the 90's team as Hirst, Waddle and Sheridan. On form he was a nightmare for opposition to play against, covered every blade of grass, broke up attacks, surged forward and tracked back. Read Johnson could easily play this role in our current side, but providing a bigger goal threat
bryan1966
Excellent player in an excellent team. Never stopped running and working. He was the perfect foil for Sheridan. Perhaps didn't score enough and was a serious wind up merchant. Remember one game where he really John Hendrie while he was at Middlesborough. Hendrie left everyone in no doubt about what he though of Palmer. Definitely deserved his England place at the time. He got unfairly tagged possibly because Taylor was manager and scapegoats were needed during the world cup 94 qualifying campaign.
asteener1867
He was similar to, but better than Reda....no offense meant...He perfectly complimented Sheridan, he won the ball with some ridiculous long legged tackles when it seemed the player had long gone, and laid it to Sheridan.,not just a ball winner though...he could run forever and simply ate up the ground with his stride....He got crosses in from ridiculous positions. Great centre half but did not like the position...his finishing up front was fookin' awful, although he lost me money once on getting a 4th I think it was against QPR and I think he got a hattrick..I believe I had a fiver on summatt like 3-1 Wednesday...and he went through....no worries i thought...he finished it like fookin' Pele. It was sad that he was suspended for the league cup final in '91 cos he played such a large part in getting us there, but I remember him saying the reception he got from the fans made up for it... HIGHERSTATE
because Taylor was manager and scapegoats were needed during the world cup 94 qualifying campaign. Also think his unconventional stature, his running style and freakish height made him a target...Never was going to be a poster boy was he.. oh for another carlton. asteener1867
Plus he got us into a load of trouble on the Shoreham with an equaliser....think it was a header from about 20 yds out (the mind plays tricks)...one o them times when you should sit on yer hands but lose it in the moment.... theowlsman
Without Carlton Palmer alongside him, Sheridan wouldn't have been able to do his stuff. So he was very important for us from that perspective alone
itsonmyhead
how good was carlton???? think of a good thing and he was twice as good as that!! his first half hatrick is still one of my all time favourite wednesday moment's :) true legend
markcurtains
Saw him on the shop video a bit back, he could take people on too. Massively underrated as your man a bit further up said, due to being part of Taylor's England team.
Rodger Wylde
In that team at that time doing that job, no one better in the country.

HOOTIE AND THE SHIT TU
Carlton Palmer was our engine, and driving force. Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.
TrickyTrev
Were in not for Carlton Palmer, we couldn't have played John Sheridan and Chris Waddle in the same mid-field, he'd do the work of 3 players.

daveyboy66
He was picked at centre half for England after an injury crisis...he had to mark the Rest of the World striker papin who was europe's golden boot winner...papin never had a kick and said that Carlton was the best defender he had played against
