  1. I was a mascot in the very early 2000s, and still have a vivid memory of a clearly pissed off Walker and Pressman bickering in the changing room on standards at about 1.45PM before the game as I did the photo and autograph thing. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must have been for those players to have lost the likes of Di Canio and Carbone and be sat next to Tony Crane and Aaron Lescott.
  2. Disastrous today, but we’ve had similar before and come back from them well so no concerns there. We bounced back from chasing shadows at Huddersfield and Coventry, and then Leicester with wins in our next league games. Looking at the table and our run-in, I’m more bizarrely more positive now than I was before the losses against Leeds and Ipswich where the worry was we’d be chasing down a 4+ point deficit again. For it to be a single point is a fortuitous outcome.
  3. Strange feeling- being pumped 6-0 and playing terribly, but the results over the last two games have gone our way. In the next round, we’ve got Swansea at home whilst: - Plymouth are away at Norwich, - Stoke are away at Hull, - Huddersfield and Blackburn have tough home games against Coventry and Ipswich, and - QPR play Brum meaning at least one of them will drop points. Probably our best chance all season at actually getting out of the bottom 3.
  4. It’s easy to focus on how utterly dogger we’ve been, but Omari Hutchinson has been superb btw.
  5. Watching Momo makes it all the more bewildering that we gave Byers away. I don’t remember us having a more cumbersome looking footballer, makes Nuhiu look like Patrick Swayze.
  6. Don’t even know where to start, absolutely dreadful. We seem to have mastered playing teams outside the top 10 and have a superb record against them. The way we’re setting up against the best sides just isn’t working- Southampton, Leicester and now here. All games over by HT.
  7. The 2005 team has a special feeling for me. Just because most of them weren’t actually very good, but the determination and bond in the squad was so strong. It made them very likeable. The team was littered with limited footballers of real character or personality- Bullen, Lee Peacock, McGovern, Lucas, Heckingbottom. There was only a sprinkling of quality (a young Brunt and Whelan, MacLean at a push) but they were so tight knit and it was a team that made you proud.
  8. 100%. Give a kid a fiver in the sweet shop and he’ll spend a fiver. Give him a tenner and he’ll spend that too. Give him a tenner but the shop isn’t allowed to sell him more than a fiver’s worth, and you’ve got a better chance that he’ll save some money and use it for something other than sweets. The system is broken, and putting more money into the hands of EFL clubs without a proper rule set to govern how it’s spent would be pouring more fuel on the fire.
  9. He seems to have recently learnt the word ‘narrative’ and now uses it endlessly as if there is some mass journalistic conspiracy against Dem Blades. Just an idea, but maybe there wouldn’t be a ‘narrative’ about you being sh!t if your last four home games didn’t sound closer to you being sh!t at tennis than sh!t at football.
  10. N.b. I’d still bring Ihiekwe straight back into the team for Ipswich, but I could see why we set up to play Leeds as we did.
  11. Thought the combination worked well- posted in another thread that whilst Iorfa plays if he’s fully fit, the Bernard/Diaby/Famewo trio is our quickest and most athletic aside from Dom. It let us sit very high, and we condensed the gaps between the lines. Leeds are so dangerous on the break, but they struggled to find spaces in transition and resorted to going over the top where the rush defence was working nicely. Then an individual error gives away a goal, and we needed to open up 2nd half. As the pockets of space grew, they took control and looked much more threatening.
  12. If Icky played, we’re 10 yards deeper and that first half goes a different way. Bambo did well, and whilst it looked a bit hair ‘em scare ‘me, the point of Bernard, Bambo and Famewo is that you can sit very high with a rush defence. I thought it worked well for the most part.
  13. Matched them for 40. Then they had a 5 minute spell during which we switched off and coughed up a goal. First 20 minutes of the second half we struggled to get into it again, which is almost inevitable for patches of games against teams with essentially better players in almost every position. Thought their subs were a bit bizarre and invited us back on towards the end, and we needed Smith to put his chance away to give us momentum to have a real go for the last 10. Not to be, but no shame in that performance tonight.
  14. Presuming nowt next week, 4 wins from our last 8 games (very doable with our run in) would get us to 50 points. If you’d offered me that a few months ago, I’d have snapped your hand off and taken your arm and shoulder with it.
