David1867
Apparently there's going to be a sizeable budget for the development squad next season. Already towards the end of this campaign we've trailed lads from Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City. Not just for the development squad mate. Someone there has told me that they are prepared to pay for lads in the u11 age group and also an under 14 has been identified at another local club with us paying around £50k for him. Exciting times lay ahead for our academy and I'd expect 100% that we are cat1 in the next couple of years!
S36 OWL
I don't see the point of the development squad now Will come in handy on saturday at Wolves hopefully
gurujuan
Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was all players who's contract was up have been released apart from Stobbs who I believe was given a year because of injuries that have blighted his progress, this was at the request of Lee Bullen . And Beatson, has he gone as well?

David1867
Please tell us the 14yr is a star academy player at SUFC?? No he's not. We have taken a fair few younger lads from United in the past 6 months or so with only 1 or 2 going the other way. The outgoing United head of academy (nick cox) warned his staff not to start a war with wednesday regarding academy players, especially now we have money. They didn't listen and relentlessly tried to take a couple of others off us, which failed. Iv been told that we may be paying money for a few of their better academy players over the summer, with 2 already been approached. Wait and see what happens. Etchesketch
Does this mean the likes of Croasdale,Meadows, De Havilland, Centeno,Wildin and Booker all on their way? Not sure if all their contracts are due to end or not.

torryowl
Very few players develop from development squads - because they are a complete waste of timethink we both agree that the central league was the best development for young players but that for some reason as gone so where do young players get a game once they are to old for the youth set up ..... Etchesketch
Is the development squad so different from when it was reserve football? The only change apart from name is that you can only have three overage outfield played and an overage goalkeeper. When it was reserve football the majority of the players were under 21 anyway so nothing's changed. There is still scope to play senior players who are coming back from injury or out of favour. This season for example Lachman played 8 games and the likes of Lees,Turner,Matias and Lopez have played this season. If it was reserve football the team would essentially be the same. Leaping Lannys Perm
We never seem to play overage players unless they are coming back from injury. I'd prefer us to play all the unused/underused subs and those who can't get a game. Obviously this is too many for the development squad so a reserve team would be better. Based on this season: Wildsmith Palmer Sasso Turner Wiggins/Bennett Sougou Semedo Lopez/Hutch Matias Joao/Nuhiu Lavery All those players could have benefited with more game time in a reserve team at one point or another this season. And in fairness, that would be a pretty menacing reserve team. It would be good enough for mid table in the Championship.

I think Lachman playing was probably some kind of punishment. Maybe back in the day, when we played Central League games, we didn't have such a comprehensive squad, in fact I know we didn't. Consequently, the reserve team would probably be made up of younger players as you say. Nowadays though, with 26 man squads the norm, and perhaps another dozen development lads, there simply isn't enough game time for everybody. Also, development games are for more infrequent than the once a week reserve programme Edited May 6, 2016 by gurujuan
scram
think we both agree that the central league was the best development for young players but that for some reason as gone so where do young players get a game once they are to old for the youth set up ..... 3 year scholarships - been saying it for a few years u17 and u19 u16 and 1st year scholars generally play at u17 while u19 made up of 2nd/3rd years (and best 1st years) After u19 season players go on loan - either upper non league or hopefully league Players rarely come through the "development" system - its also why clubs like Man City and Chelsea are going to play u17s in their u18 team and u19s in their u 21s while the genuone 21 age group players will be on loan - if the players arent good enough by then they they likely will never be Just do away with the sham that is the so-called elite development squads
