THAT Southend match 40 years ago

Delayed due to FA cup semi final between Man U and Derby (I think) at Hillsborough on the original date of the Wednesday Southend match, which ended up being played after the normal end of the season which would not be allowed now.

I always thought that was the first match at Hillsborough post fences going up

Stood right at front of Kop, I was only 12 and very small so struggled to see, great atmos and I remember running on pitch at full time.

Stood on the Kop and seemed to have a memory it persisted down all night. I was 15 and had been going all season and as much as I loved many of the players in that team - including Prendo - we were truly sheet.

We were ok for following season because during summer we splashed out on that goal machine Ian Flemming.  :duntmatter:

40 years ago !! really , yes I was there it was an amazing night practically everyone on the pitch

it was my first time I had ventured onto the hallowed turf  and can remember taking a little of it home with me !!

its occasions like that which make our beautiful club so unique 26,000 fans turned out after all the dross of that season

just showed what great support the Owls had and still have

Apparently there were 59,632 at the Derby-Man Ure semi.

It's before my time, but when attendance really dived in that era, what was it like to be at a near empty Hillsborough?

The lowest crowd which, I think, I ever saw at Hillsborough was 5883 for a League Cup tie against Bournemouth; that was actually a year or two earlier. But quite regularly crowds even for league games were less than 10,000.

It was quite eerie when it was like that because you could be standing on the Kop and no one would be within about five yards of you. Sometimes everyone would sit down on the terrace and sometimes, especially at night games, everyone would come down from the top of the Kop to stand on the first few rows to try and create an atmosphere.....or was it simply to keep warm?

Fleming was a lot later wasn't he? Big Jack bought him.

Yes I think you're right, I wonder what Jack saw in him, no better than Peter Feeley.

Think it might have been Tommy Tynan we signed during summer, he was a good signing, him and Roger Wylde were a decent front two.
