dunsbyowl
Just thought I'd share these photos from a 3-1 victory vs Leeds this day in '83. We were top of Division 2 Unbeaten in 10 Great days!
Ibbo48
Think there was an article about it in the Retro sport section of the Star earlier this week. Nice to see pics of Banno and Shelton. My 2 top players from that period. Thanks dunsby

fredmciverslovechild
What a bloody good team that was. Why Banno decided to move on at the end of that season I'll never know.

Money, we paid absolute peanuts then. Career wise I bet he regrets it.
Ibbo48
Just checked the stats for that season. Didn't lose in the league till end of November and only 6 times all season. You just forget how good they were. Will always remember that final match at Cardiff though. One of the best away days ever.

I'd definitely agree with you there. Many critics complained because it wasn't "pretty" football. But the whole idea was to pressurise the opposition, to basically get the ball in their penalty area as quickly as possible. And that started right from Martin Hodge in goal forward....he was the first goalie ever to start taking the ball out of the penalty area to clear which was all part of the idea of getting it forward quickly. A great team to watch.
Ibbo48
How true. Don't think any of the ' critics ' were our own fans. Matches at Hillsboro were a joy, mostly. You could see opposing teams wilting under the pressure. They'd clear their lines and the ball came straight back at them. It was constant and must have been so hard to play against. Used to love an oft used description of us at the time as "Wednesday's panzer divisions", blitzkreig football indeed.
Ian Fleming
Chris Morris played as a winger in that game. It wasn't till he was moved to centre half that he started getting stick.
matthefish2002
Is that a young John Sheridan I can see in a Leeds shirt on the photo of John Pearson scoring? Think in many ways Howard Wilkinson was ahead of his time in terms of the way he prepared his teams in regard to fitness. Him and Graham Taylor at Watford were innovators in a pressing game that took other teams a few years to work our how to counter act it.

Utah Owl
Chris Morris played as a winger in that game. It wasn't till he was moved to centre half that he started getting stick. Scored a great goal in that game too, diving header. Pretty sure it was on Soccer Sunday too, anyone have a copy of it?
