Sefton owl
May sound ridiculous at this stage, but when DC leads us to an inevitable promotion within the next couple of seasons, would there be scope to have a Wednesday 'B' team playing in a league such as the Northern Premier or maybe even higher, such as the conference.. we have something like 40+ pros on our books and that number won't go down anytime soon. This U21 development league is quite frankly a bit of a joke, so why not in years to come have a B team plays in a more competitive level week in week out? Of course our 'A' team need to establish themselves among this British and European elite first. Give it time. This thread is a slight exaggeration however I do see this as the way forward. It works in Spain, and will only benefit the English national team.
gurujuan
Most development sides would be far superior to any Northern Premier League teams
Leaping Lannys Perm
The system isn't in place. How would players move from one squad to the other? You are limited to a certain number of loans. Until it becomes a system in this country (and the FA have suggested it) then it would be impossible. Plus, if it did start up over hear, it would be that ridiculous League 3 that everyone is opposed to.
Herb
You'd also have sides like Chelsea who would, within a few years, have their 'A' and 'B' sides in the Premier League.
Tudders
Most development sides would be far superior to any Northern Premier League teams Not far superior. They have superior potential in some of the players cases, but potential doesn't win you football matches You only have too look at pre-season games at Stocksbridge. Can't recall any big drubbings, always seem to be quite close games and that includes some Swfc first team squad player's being involved. torryowl
its a rubbish idea........good for the big clubs but not for the clubs they are up against .......any league below the conference is part time the clubs wouldnt be able to compete against full time pro´s on anything from 2-15k wages .........over here(spain) its not popular at the lower levels for that very reason .even in the segunda the likes of barca B,villareal ,athletic add nothing to the division crowds of 2k are the norm and obviously take no fans away . OxonOwl
I think we should do something like this so that more of our 50+ professionals can get a game
torryowl
this why getting shot of the old central league was a bad idea ..... players who wernt in the 1st team got a decent level of competetion every week and it seemed to work quite well for a 100 years .young players will gain sod all just playing in the relevent age group .....guess the best bet is to send them out loan but we did that with dawson and he just sat on plymouths bench .same as corry did at carlisel . i used to be sc_owl
Won't happen until there is a major overhaul of the league system. Personally, I don't think that a club should have more than one team playing in the same league structure. Too many potential conflicts of interest. steelowl
we could call it the central league - we could call the team Sheffield Wednesday reserves
matthefish2002
First of all there is nothing inevitable about us being promoted in next couple of years. And also I really hope big professional clubs do not start having B teams further down the footballing pyramid. This would mean one less established non league club which I would hate to see. Kalamunda
It might be feasible if the other teams were Pro B teams. If not after the first broken leg caused by some Sunday league 5 minute hero and that would be that.
pauli
Germany used to have a system where B teams could go as high as the 3rd division. They changed it after Stuttgart ended up playing themselves in the cup.
The Dukeries Owl
Think we need more than 3 subs these days anyone. Remember there was plenty of scoffing when it went from 1 - 3, and most clubs have large squads these days.
