First Ever League Awayday 3rd September 1892

Recommended Posts

Wednesday's first ever League match, in the 1st Division, took place on this day in 1892.  Undaunted by the journey over 2,000 travelling Blades (sic) made the journey to Nottingham to take on County at the Castle Ground, Trent Bridge being unavailable.

'Our friends were all aboard' and Thomas Cook arranged a special excusion train, departing at 1.15 and the Midland station was so packed a poor soul slipped between the train and platform and was injured causing a delay to the kick off.   The ground was so ful that the spectators spilled onto the pitch to be held back by mounted police.

I know the "M" word is out of fashion so suffice to say - Even back then were were quite a big club ;-)  and we won 1-0 !

Interesting to note that although we were called The Wednesday

The article refers to us as The Sheffield Wednesday Club

Disproves the rumour we added Sheffield to the name because no one knew where we were from

Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.
