“Sit, friend. What news?”

“Strange times. Strange times”

“How so, the war-bands advance?”

“No. They are appeased for now.”

“A peace treaty?”

“A lone messenger appeared tonight on the stadium bridge with news from the King.  No trumpets, no fanfare. Just a pre-written scroll”

“And …?”

“Carlos of Portugal is to be the new Chief of Guard”

“When was this?”

“This evening.  As the dark cloak of night took the heat of the day. 10:30 by the moon-dial”

“A strange time for such a decision”

“True, true. But rumour has come from the Midlands that Captain Pearson, once of this shire has gone rogue from the Den of Foxes”

“Pearson of the 91’s”

“The same.”

“ And…”

“He had gathered great support over the last hours of the days sun. Legions were gathering at Whirlow. The King had to act before the invasion.”

“This Carlos, I thought he was merely a tutor for the home guard.”

“Hidden pedigree , according to the messenger”

“Was he not the same who ran from the Ottoman Empire?”

“Indeed. But many run from there. Only the lunatic Berserker Souness really made a fist of it”

“A lunatic indeed”

“And the baying mob at the Gates of Hillsborough, where are they now?”

“After the messenger's speech they drifted away into the night.”

“Do you think they will remain calm? That war is avoided?”

“They seemed underwhelmed. One thing is certain. Carlos must win his first battle.”

“Then the King must open the treasury”

“Hush. Don’t let anyone hear…”

“But he must. For if Chief Carlos’ army is not strengthened then the spectre of Captain Pearson will loom large over the Kings reign, as big as the shadow of the South Stand on the nearside wing. The natives will be restless once more. ”

“Interesting times my friend.  For now we can do no more than wait. Come, have some ale.”

"So great sage Snooty, what of the Ginger Ninja?"

Tales of the Ginger one are coming in drips and drabs. Soon as there is anything to know it will be on here!
