Guest shakesby
Obviously a lot of talk has been about Lavery being a striker - but does anybody else think it's more likely that he will be employed on the wing? Straight away that frees up a space up top for a new signing, and probably leaves us with only needing out to allow space for another. Possible or unlikely? FlyingOwl
Only way I could see it happening, and working, is if we deployed a 4-3-3 next season. As an out and out winger in a standard 4-4-2 or equivalent? He'd turn into another Maguire. He'd be frustrated at his lack of time in front of goal, we'd be frustrated at his ball greediness due to wanting to shoot all the time & his lack of defensive work rate. Think were in a position to get players who can play in their natural role, instead of playing players out of position all the time. Having said that he is a capable winger, but would rather see him playing up front
chirpyowl
Call me old fashioned, but shouldn't a winger be able to beat a man and swing over a decent cross? Never seen Lavery look as if he could do that.

Dutch McLovin
He's not a winger he's a forward who will be decent in a 2.
StudentOwl
Only in a 4-3-3, and even then it'd probably have to be a hybrid between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2... he doesn't have any of the attributes to work as an effective wide man (good passing, vision, work-rate getting back etc). In fact, if he were to be deployed there, I'd argue he'd need to work on his all round game to prevent him from being a one trick pony (run 10 yards, cut inside, shoot). Not saying he can't play the role before anyone jumps down my throat, but there's no way he's the finished article for that position just yet. Hard work during pre-season and/or a lack of wide signings and I can see him being there on the opening day and doing a half-decent job

Having said that he is a capable winger, but would rather see him playing up front I think we all would, but it means that two or three players will miss out every game. Modern wide players now are so versatile, they come inside, they spread the pitch, they have the pace to make runs in behind defenders (look at Ronaldo). Lavery for me ticks a lot of those boxes. He is direct enough to run at people and take them on. He is fast enough to get in behind defenders. Tricky enough to create space for a cross/shot. He's too good a player to leave out. Bus will be getting regular football. As will Stevie and Adthe. If you consider that Gray says a 20 goal a season striker is top priority, who sits out? Lavery shouldn't. Bus won't. Gray likes Adthe. And May isn't being allowed to leave.
Bigger Guns
Unfortunately for lavery he could play both positions quite well so he'll probably be shifted throughout the season and unlikely to get a regular run of games in his favoured position. I've seen him beat a man many times, swinging in a cross... not so sure.
SuperKevin
He's def not a winger..... He's a natural goal scorer and deserves a run up front with our new centre forward (whoever that ends up being)
owls-swfc
I'd be well satisfied if our summer business means he's the first off the bench if we're chasing a goal you mean that you would bring him on if were chasing a goal, assuming Dave had'nt scored previously then? Guest wilyfox
I really hope not. Just because Lavery can do a step-over doesn't mean he's a winger. That's a specialist position requiring a specific skill set. We need to recruit very well in wide positions. The upgrades there will be more significant than striker signings, in my opinion. RobbieOwler
It's pretty annoying we put strikers out on the wing, I think Maguire would be pretty good up front. Seeing May on the wing a few times last season was upsetting. We really need some actual wingers instead of destroying our strikers.
