WW1 recruiting at Sheffield Derby 5th September 1914

Recommended Posts

Wednesday were at Brammal Lane for a derby match.  Had these photographs a while - just found the press report of the recruitment speech at the game. It was kind of Mr Asquith to volunteer the services of football fans !

The fact that it's George Horatio Bibbings raising the call to arms interests me.

A leading Spiritualist and socialist (he helped build the Labour Party in South Wales).  But not afraid to recruit the very working men he otherwise fought hard to represent.

I know in 1914 the war wasn't a left vs. right issue.  But it still surprises me to see someone like that so heavily involved in recruiting.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

Most pointless war since 'The War of Jenkins Ear' in my opinion.

All started when Austria declared war on Serbia- who they believed were behind the Sarajevo assassination.   They should have been left to fight it out themselves.

If you don't have WW1 you don't have dented German pride and WW11.    If you don't have WW11 you don't have the Cold war and the Palestine/Israel conflict.

But 17 year olds just get bleary eyed with the sight of their nations flag and a call to arms.  All very sad and pointless.

Well, if anyone wanted a potted history of 20th century world events I'm sure they'll be at LincsOwl's door

We may not have ended up the particular WWII that we did, but it would be a mistake to assume that we wouldn't have had a World War in the late 30's (or even before).  Japan would have still attacked Russia, China, and then ultimately the British Empire.

And Empire is what would have led Britain and France into a full scale conflict with Germany in the 20's or 30's - whether or not there was any "dented German pride".  German industrialization needed more resources that its meager pre-1914 empire could provide.

And as 1867Heaven alluded to, disputes between Jews and Arabs over Palestinian territory would still have happened.  They were going on long before the nation of Israel was formed.  But yes, I'll agree that without the Nazi led genocide, there would likely have been far less emigration of European Jews to Palestine, and a smaller likelihood of Israel coming into being.

Just put the little piece in above re Grandad Pvte Albert Wright, then the though crossed my mind ...what would he think if he could see me tapping away on my PC.

I would like to believe that he would be thinking that he did not die in vain and that the freedoms you enjoy made the whole thing worthwhile.

Palestine/ Isreal ?

WW1 ended in an allied victory. The French enforced the Treaty of Versaile to the letter. Germany had to pay reparations far greater than their capabilities;  These were part of the conditions along with (Jewish) National cleansing and reclaiming former Germanic lands Poland and Sudatan land owing to fact that Jews and Slavs were considered inferior.

So Hitler takes Germany to a second war (I simplify) where Jews and Slavs are dispossessed and slaughtered. There are many survivors and refugees...The west who had (fought for freedom) didn't want the immigrants (where have I heard that before) Even though many Slavic and Polish refugees (Catholic and Jew) had escaped Nazi persecution to enlist on reaching the UK.

So no one really wanted the Jews despite some platitudes. The Zionist movement brought about the establishment of the State of Israel in 1947.

Problem was the newly created State of Israel were never satisfied with the land apportioned them and from the 50's on they have made land grab on land grab from the Palestinian West Bank.

You really should have listened at school lol
