Liam Palmer

I don't understand the love in some of our fans have with him. Looking at the player ratings and lots gave him 7's and he gets constant praise. I know he's a midfielder converted to a right back but he was shocking yesterday and has been in a number if games this season. It's not glaring errors he's making its the basics of defending. The number of times he let a Huddersfield player run from just inside their own half and either get into a crossing position or be able to get into the box unchallenged was criminal.

Even gary Neville was saying just the other day as a full back you just stop crosses at all costs. If you don't you've failed in doing your job. Palmer doesn't have to dive in but he doesn't hold up an attacker or put in a tackle. Waiting for them to get in the box is the worst possible time to make a half arsed tackle like he does. There were a minimum of 5 times he let players run at him without attempting to win the ball.

His positional sense was all over the place too. Just letting deep runners go past without clicking in he should be tracking the run. Then he saunters back. I know it was a miss match but he let Grant Holt have a free header. He doesn't have to win the ball but as a minimum jump with him to make it tougher.

An incredible amount of basic school boy errors are being made by him this season and he really needs being coached in this as its not his natural position. We are lucky we have quality in Westwood and the central defence (mainly Lees) who are mopping up after him.

Give me strength......

Why it's true..... He was shocking and most our fans don't see it. People I speak to who have played football at a decent level see this. Fans with blind faith who loves clap don't. I thought several of our olayers had a good game yesterday, just not Palmer. Helan had a very good game defensively at left back for example.

Based on yesterday, I agree with this.

There was an incident towards full time where he lost the ball just inside our half but where Helan should have been. The rest of the defence then busted their nads to get back (I think we were attacking first) and he was just sauntering back. By the time they got a shot away he was about 25/30 yards from goal.

On the other side of the coin, though, he has been MoM a few times for me this season. Brentford springs to mind

Crikey, I think I watched a different game. Thought both our full backs were decent yesterday, no complaints

That's because nothing came from Huddersfield. If their final ball had been better or someone else brought a player down in the box Palmer would have been slated and fans saying why hasn't he stopped the cross or why hasn't he made a challenge before he gets in the area. Because the rest of the defence including Westwood played well it hides the numerous basic errors he constantly makes.

I could be wrong but I don't remember any crosses coming from their left. Bunn had a very quiet game. The 2 most dangerous crosses came from Helan's side. I actually thought Helan's pace got him out of quite a bit if bother yesterday from poor positioning. Agree that Palmer has been a bit iffy this season, but not yesterday

If there was any of our defenders who were slightly off their game, then I'd say it was Loovens. All in all though, it was another solid defensive performance restricting Huddersfield to only a couple of clear cut chances. It's only when the pace of Wells was introduced, did they start to open us up a bit. We had no such option up front.

Well there were plenty but they all lacked quality so they don't tend to stand out. Scannell had a very good game for them and would have caused Palmer much more problems than he did Helan. I agree that Helans pace does get him out of trouble and his position sense isn't great but at lest he was getting back. Palmer just let players run at him without making a challenge. Against better opposition he will (and does) get torn apart.

Didn't think he did against Norwich particularly

Like I said he didn't make any obvious errors but he doesn't understand the basics of defending. Do you think it's acceptable to just let their players cross unchallenged at every opportunity or let someone run from the halfway line into the box with no attempt at holding the player up or tacking them. As they lacked quality in their left hand side his errors went unpunished. It doesn't mean they aren't there, it just means he got away with it.

so, your slating palmer for something that didn't happen? lol (with regards to scannell)

Wow, you really just don't get it. It was happening. He let players into the box and he constantly let them cross unchallenged. Just because someone is making up for you fornicate yo behind you doesn't mean he's not making mistakes and getting the basics wrong. That's like saying in a hypothetical situation Less hacks someone down and gives away a penalty. Westwood then saves the penalty. Does that mean that Lees hasn't made a mistake and is now free from criticism?

I've been saying the same as the OP since the day Palmer went it at right back, he goes in and does a job, hes not wee wee poor but hes not good and how he gets a game ahead of Buxton at times is beyond me, his positional sense is shocking and he just doesn't know the basics of defending, which being a midfielder is understandable, people watch him and think hes brilliant because he tries hard and hes a local lad, in reality, hes not a patch on Buxton. A very good defence are covering up his mistakes.
