How many points are referees going to cost us?

Recommended Posts

There's no disputing that our performance today wasn't good enough, but if the referee had given what looked like a clear penalty for the foul on Lee, then we'd have the 3 points, deserved or not. When you're on the kind of run we're on, you sometimes need that rub of the green to help you get back on track, but unfortunately our luck has been out for some time now.

I also can't help but think that it's contributed to the erosion of confidence we've witnessed: if crucial decisions had gone our way in previous games, we'd have picked up more points and would be further up the table, allowing us to relax a bit more rather than tensing up and trying to force the issue as we seem to be doing at the moment.

When you consider some of the crucial decisions that have gone against us this season, such as:

  • Antonio's foul on Palmer being ignored in the lead up to their goal;

  • May's goal against Bolton being harshly ruled out;

  • Ipswich's handball in the lead up to their equaliser being ignored;

  • Watford's offside opener being allowed to stand;

  • Charlton's foul on Nuhiu in the box being ignored;

  • Rotherham's foul in Lee in the box being overlooked;

we could be anything up to 14 points better off! Now I'm not saying that I'd expect all of these decisions to have gone our way, but I certainly wouldn't expect them all to have gone against us, either.

I suppose all teams will have similar hard luck stories, but we haven't been on the 'right' side of many that I can think of so far this season. When you consider the marginal decisions that our opponents have benefitted from, such as the two penalties Middlesborough were awarded against us, or the Drenthe red card which helped Bournemouth on their way to victory, you have to wonder when the decisions are going to start going our way so that we might reach the equilibrium we're lead to believe tends to be achieved over the course of a season.

we just have to ignore it, make our own luck as it were.

doesn't help that refs refuse to make big decisions, but what do you wanna do. send another dvd like dave did. it gets us nowhere and makes us more of a target for referee abuse.

i was thinking about it a lot during the game and it all seems to be about tipping the balance, most refs don't want to do it. that's why your man citys (obviously not the ref in their last CL game) manures and what have you get the decisions- cos if they end up winning its the status quo and the referees perfor"manc"e is forgotten about.

if we'd have banged 3 or 4 more goals in this season we'd be in the top 6 and decisions would be aiding us further.

I have never really like blaming the results on referees, because our players and tactics should be good enough, whether the referee is or not.

But this is getting beyond a joke now, some of them are nearly in tears if they have to give a decision in our favour.

It cannot be all just a coincidence.

If you are relying on the ref giving you a penalty to score a goal ,you have major problems . EVERY team has decisions go against them, but still manage to score goals in games. we cannot blame bad refereeing decisions for our pathetic inability to score goals.

Go back to last year when players were getting sent off against us every week

We didn't complain then even when some of them were soft as sh@t, referees are always going to get a few decisions wrong both for and against us, but you can't rely on them to win games, we have to do more.

OP  a good well constructed post mate  I agree that compared to last season we seem to get no help from refs

however I suspect that if you were a fan of virtually any of the other teams you could come up with such a list

so i don't think you can blame refs  they don't  control moody inconsistent players who can't pass positively dont move cant cross or miss the first man.

When was the last time we were awarded a penalty in a league game?

The OP makes a very good point.

you have to have players in the box to get a penalty something we haven't worked out yet on a consistent basis
