What exactly does Stuart Gray mean here ?

The Owls boss has also hinted at making changes ahead of the trip to The Valley.

He added: “I think we need to mix it up a little bit. Credit to the players for their effort and commitment but as it has shown at the moment, we are falling a little short in the final third.

“So we are looking at those areas to strengthen.”

The main reason we are toothless is the tactics. We will never score playing a 9-0-1 formation. Maybe his signing ought to be some management support who knows something about tactics?

I agree to an extent.

As a defensive unit we are very good. We defend as a team from the front.

The same is not true the other way round.

We are slow at moving the ball around into attacking positions and then the choices are poor in the final 3rd.

The reason for this? A midfield that is made up of players who's primary strength is to press and defend.

Pressing and defending should be a prerequisite for all players. Instead we end up playing defensive 'specialists' like Semedo who gets rid of the ball like a hot potato as soon as he is in possession.

Receiving the ball under pressure and being able to redistribute it in a manner that puts the opposition on their back foot is what we need to be doing. It won't happen with Semedo next to Lee.

We need to play one of the more technically gifted midfielder we have at the club.

this great start.....isn't looking so great now is it?

After all, its only 9 points better off than last year now?

Then we put a wonder run together, cant see us doing the same this year somehow.

thank god for blackpool, brum and bolton

we are a mid table side and that's where we will finish

keep it tight and hope to pinch a goal as worked pretty well so far away from home ,why change ?.

We haven't been nicking any goals?

....

It depends on your outlook.

If you see us as a team who is deficient and can only get results from pure defensive tactics then you are right.

Personally I think we can do better.

Gray managed to turn things around being positive. No need to revert back to negative tactics now.

But he had the tools to do it last season. He's been badly let down this season and we don't have anywhere near the attacking options we had at our disposal last year. I'm happy to keep it tight, as long as we get back to keeping the ball while doing so. That, for me, means a return to the five man midfield.
