Through Balls

Can any of our forwards run beyond the defence? Seriously, none of our forwards can make those sort of runs even if the ball was played. Only Stevie May has the right idea but he lacks the pace and physical presence to get through, far too easy to outmuscle.

We'll be reyt, once Tom Ince comes in on loan.

All our play is down the wings and when you dont have a single player who can cross the ball properly we are easy to pick off.

I discount Drenthe because he hasnt been playing, yesterday was the first time we saw what he was capable of.

We are two one dimensional, we have no plan b. Its either down the wings or an hoof ball from the back.

There was one point in the second half today when Maghoma cut inside (as he was doing brilliantly in the second half today) and played a great ball that May (y'know, the superstar striker whose runs are too intelligent for the rest of the team) completely and utterly failed to anticipate, when he could have easily been through one-on-one.

You mean the one where May was on the shoulder but had to wait that long for Maghoma to release the ball he would have been offside.

Sounds like the same incident, but May was a yard behind the defender when Maghoma played it, he wasn't even on the shoulder and, when Maghoma did pass it (admittedly, as you say, it did take him a while), May took about half a second to react, by which time the defender was already mopping it up.

That's the one, May had to check his run and get back onside as Maghoma lacked the vision/know how to release the ball at the correct moment.

Unfortunately our CM are that deep that a through ball has to get through about 3 players over a distance of 50 yards for it to be classed as a through ball. That then just becomes a punt upfield.

The only way I can see this happening is with someone creative a bit further up the pitch and central (maybe Maguire). Something like this (if everyone was fit)...

              Westwood

Buxton Lees Loovens Mattock

          Hutchinson Lee

                 Maguire

     May       Nuhiu       Drenthe

This.

Even with a few yards head start, May, Madine and Nuhiu would be (and are) caught up fairly quickly.

Always remember an interview with Sheridan saying that Hirst & Atkinson had so much pace that hrough balls were easy.

Maybe Maguire up front would help.

When was the last time we actually scored from a through ball in behind the defence? In fact when was the last time we actually tried one. Absoloute dross.

Just over week ago, Meadows against Colchester, after Corry superbly played him through :-)
