DuncOwl Posted October 2, 2014 Share Posted October 2, 2014 I'll get slaughtered for this but hey; Gray manages to get more out of players than anyone else could ever do. We need this to ensure we make the most from our thin squad. I do believe that with minimal additions and a lot of luck regarding injuries that we do have the quality to challenge for a playoff spot. However, I believe it is apparent that Gray does not have the tactical brain required to maintain this challenge. His tactical change on Tuesday that cost us the points emphasised this; his inability to change a game when we are on the back foot (more last season than this admittedly) will start to happen more and more as opposing managers work out how to nullify our threats (as is happening more and more of late); his routine of always making the same change at the same time, regardless of whether it is needed or not. All these will mean that as the season progresses, our points average will get less and less. Therefore do you think, that considering these failings, we should get someone in to support him who has a tactical brain. Someone who can see a gap in ours or the opposition's game plan and offer up options during the game? This person would simply assist in tactics and not in the management of the players or the game. dorian gray Posted October 2, 2014 Share Posted October 2, 2014 Do we actually have any tactics, or are we doing well through "honesty and application"? application of what? tactics? if you're under the cosh, with an opposition press on into your half in numbers, i feel it's wrong to try and play your way out of trouble in your own half with numerous opposition players in attendance, i saw turner's side try this when we were in the third ... knocking a long direct ball to the c/f, and having him knock it on for the smaller (hopefully nippier) man to pick up is a more threatening relief... also you can knock it long and out wide with the intention of getting a pacey player in behind their fullback (but we may have lost that as a best bet with antonio's departure)... He quick realised we wouldnt get a goal - even if we did, cos the ref would have found a way to disallow it, so the best we could do at that point was 1-1. and we did, so its well done from me. Yes, because you can accurately predict what would have happened would we not have made those changes Slaughtered? Certainly I don't see how yesterday's failings were of a tactical nature anyway, or are you suggesting that any failure to win a game is immediately a tactical failing irrespective of the quality of the opposition. Unless you're secretly responsible for our tactics. Either way, it's not tactics that lost us the game yesterday; sometimes a team just has better players than the opposition. Other than starting Drenthe, who for all we know, only has 45 minutes in his legs at the moment, I'm not sure what options Gray had that would have obviously led to a better performance from our players. Of course there are. There are also clubs with more support, more ambitious chairman, better players, more money and better stadiums and that is why after 20 years of decline we can't compete at the top of the second division. OurDan Posted October 20, 2014 Share Posted October 20, 2014 Agree with OP. Working hard and playing for each other isn't a tactic. Getting the full backs around the wingers to deliver a cross that can't beat the first man aren't successful tactics so they need changing. That hasn't worked for us all season at home yet we carry on doing it.
