Claude Dielna : First impressions ?

Recommended Posts

What are people's first impressions of Claude Dielna ?

I was suprised that Dielna didn't get a game at Man City. Then Buxton was prefered at Centre back for the Cardiff game which baffled me completely. It was almost as if Gray had reservations about playing Dielna for some reason, when clearly he had bought him as cover, along with Zayette for Lees and Loovens. Then Zayeete goes off and Dielna comes on against Reading and not many people have spoken about how he looked. So i thought i would ask. How well did Dielna do ? Does he look a solid defender ? Good feet ? Good header of the ball, position play etc ? Or will he need time. Zayette seems to have found his feet this season and has got some very good reviews in the games he has played in, so i wondered whether if people are not sure about Dielna at the moment, maybe he needs time to settle in at the club and will progress with time and games.

Thoughts ?

Early days.  Likes to charge out and try to win the ball.  I think Lees, Loovens and Zayatte are all better, but time will tell.

He was getting beaten every time in the air on Tuesday, whereas Zayatte wasn't, and that put us under a lot pressure defensively, and also I suspect why Gray dropped May into midfield to allow Palmer and especially Semedo to sit a little deeper.

Still, beyond him not seeming so strong in the air, it was easy to appreciate his athleticism, and also why he often plays left back as well. He punted it a few times, but also looked to play it out from the back a few times also. It's early days for him, and no point trying to conclude too much at this point.

Seems he can't head it

He can head it alright, as there were quite a few powerfully headed clearances the other night, but only when there was no one challenging for the ball. He seemed to mistime his jumps, but also hunch a little too. Suspect technique which I suppose could be coached out of him.

From these early comments, i am thinking that Gray may prefer him as a cover left back for Mattock. If he he can't head the ball and likes to go forward, then the left back slot seems more suited to him and he has played in that position. Helan always works well on the left hand side of midfield, rather than as a left back, so maybe that is what he will do and play Zayette as the cover centre back.

First ten minutes after he came on he was all over the place and lost his first two headers as somebody already said mistimed his jump? Grew into the game and looked steady after that cleared the ball when he had to and kept Mcgoldrick quiet

You've got to remember that Zayatte was playing against mcgoldrick, whereas they swapped sammon for him when Zayatte went off. Not many Win it in the air against Sammon.

I didn't know he even did impressions so I couldn't possibly say which were his first, mimicking school teachers seems to be how all the well known impressionists started such as John Culshaw and the late great Mike Yarwood .

It's a fair point. Ipswich's forward players are all generally strong in the air, especially Sammon, but still, it's not that he was just getting beaten in the air against Sammon, he wasn't even putting in a challenge that at least made it awkward for Sammon. He did improve though as the game drew on, or at least, the team adapted better because we were starting to get to more of their knock-downs first.

I'm going to go with something simple and childlike. Maybe a cow? "Moo!"
