All the doom and gloom merchants are out tonight, but let's talk fact! We've been great since Gray took over and now we can see that the real problem is in defence, all those calling for a 20 goal a season man are nothing short of delusional , we need a leader at the back and a dependable top half championship player next to him to sure up the defensive line as this is what has cost us many games like today's, a good defensive line added our current team will see us definitely push for the play offs , we can score enough goals! We just concede too many stupid and avoidable goals, I'm talking a coughlan/bougherra esque partnership and the prem will not be far away . I am definetly optimistic about next season I just hope Milan puts his hand in his pocket and plugs the MASSIVE hole in our defence

Best not to get carried away

We've not been great since Gray took over, we had a great start but let's be honest, we've steadied the ship and been better, but I think we've won 5 or 6 of the last 17 games, it's not brilliant

A better start to the season with the right signings ( within our budget ) and we could aim for a top half, maybe even top 10 finish, but I think we're a fair way off even considering a play off push just yet.

Whilst joining you in optimism .. lets face it. Milan isnt going to break the bank. Too risky. However, i think if we get rid of some of the wage stealers we can bring in better quality. Thats the key. Quality. Just have to sit tight and watch close season unfold. I hope its onwards and upwards.

Lets face it the play offs next season will only be a pipe dream, first we need A) To have some huge luck, B) We bring in quality players and C) Avoid injuries.

Look at Burnley they have had some huge luck, using only 22 players (something like that) and not to mention 2 strikers that have over 30 goals between them.

We need a goalscorer, we need a box to box midfield player that will chip in with goals and we need to add more creativity.

Set pieces are so important now days and ours seem pretty poor, that also needs to be addressed.

The one thing that should give lots of clubs hope is the fact that it such an achingly average standard of competition in this division

The difference between most clubs is absolutely minimal

How in the name of f*ck can clubs likes Bournemouth, Blackburn, Reading, Ipswich and Brighton still have a realistic play-off chance - there is so very little to choose between clubs like them - and a whole host of clubs below them.

Any club showing even moderate levels of consistency have a real chance at getting to the play offs

Doesn't seem to be anything too terrifying coming down - Wolves may benefit from momentum but nothing else coming up

Our concern is gonna be our recruitment strategy - and that is just  huge unknown currently

Still work in progress.

Apart from the current top three and Yeovil who despite a valiant attempt, could not realistically compete , everyone else has been hit and miss.

3 established championship signings could see us competing in the top 10 next year. Its no coincidence that our form has dipped after the loss of Semedo.

Crucial summer and pre-season coming up. If we again leave our recruitment until the end of August then expect the same next year.

We've averaged 1.5 points per game since Gray took over, averaged over a season that's 69 points which would better Brighton's tally and they're 6th now. I think if we're luckier with injuries we'll have a good chance next season.

I'd say it's more the loss of Loovens rather than the loss of Semedo that's hit us hardest.

I suppose a concern would be that our strongest defensive unit, and I include Kirkland and Hutchinson in that, was leaking goals whilst only missing Loovens. Personally, I think we have missed Semedo , he provides that shield that we need. Also think the return of Antonio has weakened us defensively

It looks likely that we will finish with less points than last year but at the same time in an higher position?  Bizarre but that's the Championship for you, in the main two consecutive seasons are never the same?

As far as optimism goes I think we have improved generally on last season and the scope is there for more progression next season.  I think Stuart Gray has got us playing a more measured game where under DJ we were playing attritional football which relied on the perecentages which either go for and against you at various intervals during the course of a season.  It worked for a time but was never going to progress us long term.

The balance between defence and attack has been an age old problem for Wednesday Managers down the years to solve.  If we are scoring freely then chances are we are conceding freely and if we are defensively sound, we're more than likely struggling to score.  I do have some sympathy for SG because he has had to for one reason or another chop and change the team around constantly due to circumstances beyond his control particularly the back four which makes securing safety at this stage of the season given the situation he inherited from DJ even more remarkable.

As for next season a top half finish has to be the target whether it's realistic or not probably depends on the players he manages to keep, the quality of the players he manages to sign and a much fairer wind with regards to injuries and suspensions but for me we are in a better place now than we were this time last year.
