Creativity from midfield

Whilst everyone seems absolutely desperate to sign a "midfield general" or a creative midfielder, isnt our system more suited to having defensive centre mids (Palmer Lee Hutchinson etc) who slow other teams down in midfield and stop them playing right through us, whilst having our creativity out wide. To have an attacking midfielder we'd need a winger who can track back more like Michael Gray used to, which maguire Antonio Maghoma don't offer, so the role of creating/scoring falls more to them

Basically do we really need an attacking centre mid given wide creativity seems to be the focus of our system

At home we need a Central midfield player to get behond the strikers sometimes.

Alot of goals are scored by a simple advanced run from a midfield player.

Resulting in 5-10 extra goals from midfield.

I wish Kieran Lee would score a few.

4-2-3-1 is always the way forward Lee/Palmer/Semedo/Hutch or whoever can play the sitting in the middle role. We've also got McCabe and Corry in reserve, if they ever step up. With say Nuhiu up front and the likes of Antonio/Maghoma/Maguire/Lavery feeding off him

Attacking/goal scoring central midfielder is Gary Gardner's position. Sadly we didn't get to see him play that role, think he only ended up playing in 4-4-2 with Coke or Hutch.

Gardner's got plenty of talent but little defensive instinct. A midfield 3 of Semedo, Lee and Gardner would be great to see, with Antonio, Maguire and Nuhiu up front.

He plays the holding midfielders, which allows the full backs to bomb forward more often. Its actually quite a fluid formation hes pushing - during the game we can easily move from 451, to 433, 424 and even 442 and back again.

Midfield wise, semedo, lee, palmer with the addition of another ball winner and a box to box player, should be enough. Still unsure about hutch.

I agree we need two, but that's why I would sign Hutch. Despite his poor injury record.

But he wouldn't need to start every game for me.

If we sign Hutch on relatively low wages, we could then save ourselves more money to spend on another central midfielder or on our attacking players we need. We're also still getting a good player in Hutch, who can cover numerous positions.

If we can go into the season with...

Kieran Lee

Jose Semedo

Liam Palmer

Sam Hutchison

NEW SIGNING

I would be happy.

We certainly didn't see the best of Gardner, he simply wasn't fit enough to make any real impact on games Have we burnt our bridges with the player by not renewing? On paper, he could be a good signing if he is released. A tall strong central midfielder with good set piece delivery and a powerful shot. Young enough to come good I reckon

Off topic but who is this vedadaxecremn that's negging all opening posts? He/she is not listed in members.

I've plussed the OP to nullify whatever his/her agenda is and suggest others do the same. We have enough anonymous non-owls on here already ruining threads.

All depends on who else is available I guess.

Hutch is a gamble due to his past. Gardner even more so. If we signed hutch, he'd have to be rotated relatively often. Not ideal.

Quite possibly one of them we should thank for his efforts, and move on. Again, unless we cant sign better.

Was wondering about this myself, had the odd neg myself from this same someone who never posts or comments themselves and doesn't exist is a wee bit odd.

I'd always like us to play two up top at home and one up top away.

I don't think we really need to spend a great deal on sorting this 'creativity' issue out. It seems to be a bit of a myth with us recently. As mentioned in another thread, we seem to be something like the fourth highest scorers in 2014 across the entire football league.

That doesn't indicate to me a lack of creativity.

I also think we have a ready made 'creative' midfielder in our ranks in Kieran Lee. He is a top, top player. Technically superb, works so hard and is a top passer. The side of his game that needs working on is getting goals. But some of the passes I've seen him do are top-drawer.

Stick a destroyer or two alongside him and our midfield could easily compete with any opposition midfield in the Championship. Whether that be Hutchinson or Semedo, we haven't been outplayed in midfield very often at all. Only exception really being Wigan.

I wouldn't sign Gardner.

And I wouldn't sign Hutch and rely on him as a regular first team player week in week out.

But what Hutch would give us is very good cover in a variety of positions, where he could be used sparingly, against certain opposition, in certain formations and ways of playing.

He'd be part of a squad, a batch of midfield players to choose from.

Think of it as.... replacing Giles Coke with a far superior player.

All dependent on contracts/wages of course.
