20 Years Today - The Waddle Game

Recommended Posts

Seems like yesterday! One of the best individual performances by A Wednesday player I've seen ( and he was 33!!  - the other ten weren't bad either!

5-0  26,350 Goals from Mark Bright, Nigel Jemson Carlton Palmer, Chris Waddle  and an OG

Not forgetting the man who made it all possible ;-)

Great memories. It was a pleasure to have witnessed Waddle in his pomp in our famous blue and white stripes.

He deservedly won the PL player of the season award the season before that and he should've picked up more international caps during his time here.

The likes of Waddle; Sheridan, Hirst, Nilsson, Walker and Harkes, etc were a dream to watch back in the early 90's.

It's hard to believe that we're the same club and that players of that calibre played in our colours when you look at the state the club as been in for the past 15 or so years.

If we never make it back to those heights at least I can be proud that the club I love mixed it with the very best during my lifetime, if even for a brief time.

I feel sorry for the poor sods who missed that era and have only known how dire we've been with the odd promotion from the third tier to remember.

Remember it like it was yesterday... I dont think you will ever see a better individual performance of that magnitude again.?

That you tube clip doesn't do it justice ? Waddle was relentless and doesn't show the bit when he beat Burrows and sets off only to turn back and do it again poor sod!

Remember walking up leppings lane after that game and a bloke talking to his mate saying Waddle was lazy because he never tracked back when he lost the ball.

Would love to hear what that bloke thinks about our current squad if he wasn't impressed by waddle FFS

The saying "he was unplayable" must have been invented for Waddle that day.  Quite simply the best individual performance that I have ever seen.  I can't imagine it being bettered.  For all the hype surrounding play from such as Bale or even Ronaldo, Waddle played a more complete game and let's not forget that he didn't start he was sub as he was just on his way back from injury.  I seem to recall that he came on around the 30 minute mark.  Anyone care to actually check?

This game will always be special in our family as my aunt wrote to the club to tell them that my Grandad would be celebrating his 80th birthday around the time of the game. Graham Mackrell wrote back and invited him to the game with a guest to watch the game in the Directors box. He went along and had an excellent day which the club made special for him treating him like a VIP. He would have been 100 last week if he was still with us and I will be eternally grateful for his influence on me and all those games he took me to. So bearing in mind all of the ups and downs he endured watching Wednesday for all those years it was fitting that Chris Waddle put on a VIP show for him that day.

All the best Gramps!

A joy to watch, watching that game it had passing, keeping possession of the ball, movement and skill. Waddle at the time wasn't going to beat any one for pace  it was just pure pure skill.

How could any defender possibly know what to do when he got the ball, a drop of the shoulders a quick shimmy and he's gone a joy to watch.

Sigh
