He was the complete striker. He could score with his left or right. He could head it. He had pace and power. He could dribble. He literally had it all. How i wish we still had a striker like Hirst! Hirsty was amazing but even he took a few seasons, maybe more before he really hit full stride. I hope the goal machine gets the same patience. I think that's why a lot of us old uns are moaning feckers cos we've seen that team play and it's a hard act to follow. Hirst played the first half and Shearer the second. It was billed as "who would replace Lineker up front for England?" Hirtsy did well but got no service. This Madine is a real prospect and might well become a big name in the game, but Hirsty was "special" from day 1. He was "raw" to say the least in his first season, but the power, pace and talent was dead obvious. I didn't realise until the other day that he is STILL listed in the Guiness Book of WORLD Records with the "fastest shot ever recorded" ...... He said Hirsty used to come to training stinking of beer and Allan Clarke would just say to him "David, get a bath and go home!" He also said he saw him in a pub in South Elmsall a couple of days after Man Utd put 'that' bid in for him. He said that it was surreal to see an England international in a run down pub with a pint in one hand and a *** in the other!! Hirsty is an absolute legend and I feel so privileged to have seen him play. He was my era and when I see the players that we have been subjected to over recent years compared to him it makes me cry! Guest Bald Owl Posted January 3, 2012 Share Posted January 3, 2012 I was lucky enough not to have missed a game home or away for about ten years all through our glory period, however being young I was pi55ed at most of the games but Hirst could do no wrong he was my idle. It used to drive my Dad nuts because no matter what the score, on my match report when I got home Hirst was always amazing. :biggrin: . Watching this footage I was right, and he was better than Shearer that's why Fergie wanted him. Can you imagine Man Utd with Hirst and Shearer up front?
